HenHouse Talks the Future

And to get to the future, you have to talk about the past. And that past is fraught when you are a minority brewery in this country.

Which is why it was great to hear Shyla from Bow & Arrow and Teo from our SoCal Crowns & Hops talk about their respective journeys in a beer world that is quite white.

Here are some of the words of interest that struck me from the discussion…

  • Why do we assume that beer drinkers and brewery owners look a certain way?
  • access to capital is still a major hurdle
  • call out people, don’t let the haters use language without using language to change the narrative
  • No Jerks!
  • How do we frame gentrification when it is a minority business person in a minority neighborhood
  • We need to get to a time where the story is the beer and the beer only, and not who is behind it because telling the story of who you are, if that story always revolves around your skin tone is tiring
  • Don’t be an Ally in name only. Do sonething

SF Beer Week ’19

Starting with an Opening Gala, the 2019 SF Beer Week promises a load of fun beer events most notably the original events that serve as the backbone for the week: “the world’s first Double IPA Festival, now including Triple IPAs, in its 18th year at the Bistro in Hayward, on February 2nd, and the Celebrate Craft party for industry and friends at Trumer Brewery in Berkeley, on February 9th.”

Check HERE to see all the events as they pop up on the calendar.

SF Guild goes Regional

In what may be a blueprint for the even more sprawling (especially in traffic) Los Angeles, the San Francisco Brewers Guild has made a change from city to regional organization.

The goal being to “evolve into a regional trade association devoted to promoting independent breweries across the greater Bay Area year-round.”

That means that some independent breweries throughout the SF region will be extended invitations to join the Guild and then get slotted into their appropriate chapter such as San Francisco, East Bay, North Bay and South Bay — as well as a possible fifth for Santa Cruz / Monterey area.

On a side note, SF Beer Week Dates have been set for 2018, February 9-18 for a week+ of Bay Area festivities.

SF Beer Week..is coming

Never to early to plan for the massive amount of beer events in San Francisco during their SF Beer Week. The initial calendar is out and ready to be perused by beer fans by the Bay, and us Angelenos too!

Events like:

Festival of Firkins
Magnolia Pub & Brewery, San Francisco
February 12th, 11:00am – 8:00pm

SF Beer Week

Less than a month away now from the big SF Beer Week and it looks like I will miss it yet again! This time I will be in Portland for the first days of the fest that runs from the 10th to the 19th of February. And during the last half, I will be catching up at work.

But there are some cool looking events (and an app too). Magnolia is pulling some rare stuff out of their vaults. Social Kitchen and Brewery is hosting a beer breakfast and many many more.

Marin Brewing + Chinese herbs

marin
Marin Brewing has created a new and unusual beer, an herbal beer made in collaboration with San Anselmo herbalist Dr. Yen-Wei Choong. Yen-Wei runs the Yellow Emperor Natural Healing Center and Zen Garden.
from Jay Brooks
“Marin Brewmaster Arne Johnson started with his E.S.B. as the base beer. To that, he added 38 pounds of the proprietary mix of Chinese herbs that Dr. Choong created.”
