Review – Count Hopula Red IPA

I know it isn’t October but when presented with the opportunity to try my first, From the Vault series beer from SanTan Brewing, I threw holidays to the wind.

Count Hopula a doesn’t quite pour blood red though there is a tint of darkness in the brown colored beer. At first I wasn’t enjoying it and I didn’t quite know why. It’s plenty hoppy for sure. But there is a spicy rye character and some heavy malt taste that aren’t working in concert for me. Three flavors going off in different directions.

I started to think that maybe this was an old can. But try as I might, no bottled on date was to be found so I don’t know for sure. But this beer gets a negative score from me.

I will readily admit that I got this beer for the name first.  I did want my wife to see the can on the kitchen counter and have her say something about it.  But I did, really, want to see how this Double Chocolate Porter (DCP?) from SanTan Brewing tasted.  And this is what I think:

The SP pours a dark black with a big initial head that fades away to reveal residual lace on the glass. Aroma is bitter dark chocolate. At first the flavor made me think of slightly burnt coffee but that fades into the chocolate. It is a bit thin for me and I do get some metallic off notes. I was expecting more cocoa from a double chocolate beer. Falls into a middle of the pack beer for me.

Review – Mr. Pineapple from SanTan Brewing

Whilst window (of the coolers) shopping at Sunset Beer, I spied a new set of arrivals from SanTan Brewing of Chandler, Arizona so I picked up a can and it so happened to be the one that was selling the fastest.  People like pineapple I guess.

Mr. Mister pours a hazy light orange. Sweet fruit notes hit the nose. Pineapple is there as is, strangely, banana. It has a very smoothie-esque consistency and taste to it.

I was expecting more wheat and a brighter fruit taste but on the flip side, I was worried that the pineapple juice would totally overwhelm the proceedings. Neither happened and I was kinda disappointed with the the more Radler effects that seemed to take over. More wheat and a little more carbonation would have made this better for me.
