Pretty is Back

One beer that I wished that I could get fresher and more of were the ales of Pretty Things from founders Dann and Martha Paquette.  They had unique beers often with a European spin to them like their Jack D’Or Saison as well as some historically researched beers that I found to be fun explorations.

They became embroiled in the distribution hi-jinks on the East Coast and called it out to the media and then in short order they had called it quits.  But not entirely.  Now the Paquettes are in Sheffield.  Spiritual home of the new Doctor and they have a new brewery, Saint Mars of the Desert.

Their reputation has allowed them to create something brand new but with the DNA of Pretty Things but on a smaller and English scale.

Maybe they still have contacts in the U.S. and some of the beer may come to SoCal.

Video Review – Pretty Things Field Mouse Farewell

This website has highlighted beers from the Pretty Things Ale Project a few times but until recently the only beer that I have been able to sample has been their Jack D’Or. (Quite good by the way).

But recently one of my beer shops, Vendome in Toluca Lake had THREE new to me Pretty Things beers in stock. So I grabbed them up and this month they are the focus of my video reviews.

We start with …….

Pretty Things – new bitter

The Ale Project of Pretty Things has a new beer, Hedgerow Bitter, described as “…our first properly-hoppy beer. We wanted a beer that was dry and bitter, and that’s what we got. 5.4% abv with all UK grown hedgerow variety hops: Pioneer, First Gold and Sovereign.”

I’ve had one Pretty Things ale and now I want more!

East Coast Brews!

Local beer is great if you are the local. But if you want to get a full rounded palate and not become one dimensional in your beer love, then you have to look for some beer outside the box of your normal life. (Very new-agey, don’t ya think?)

That is all preamble to the great box of beer that arrived while I was in Portland….

Now this is a great selection for many reasons. One, you have a variety of styles. Two, a good representation of different breweries with vastly different approaches and third, a nice specialty, hard-to-find beer.

You will probably be seeing reviews of at least the Sorachi Ace.
