Is 2023 the Year?

Predictions tend to either clump into educated guesses or a pundit re-wording the same thing they said the year before, and the year before that.

With that latter spirit in mind, let’s trot out some antiques and I will comment…

Pilsners will really be a thing this year – This is the biggest craft beer chestnut. The thing is, most places have a really good pils or a lager on tap. Highland Park Brewery here in Los Angeles has all kinds on tap. We can stop with this prediction because it is low key already proven.

Seltzers will lose steam – This has been the pandemic question each year. I never found one that struck me as anywhere near a beer replacement and have wondered how people thought they were drinkable. I think the category will lose additional steam this year. People will continue to buy them but they are not the song of the summer anymore.

Non-Alcoholic will gain momentum – This is pretty much a gimme as predictions go. More people are entering the market chasing that sweet deal that Athletic got from Keurig / Dr. Pepper. The beers themselves are still near beer in name only but the sober curious will buy them despite flavor flaws.

Mergers and Acquisitions – The era of big deals is on pause. This year, it will be the snatching up of closed breweries by those who need more production room. Perhaps in a different part of town or state to cut down on delivery costs.

BSP Mid-Year Predictions

Time to unleash my prognostication skills on to the back half of the beer calendar year 2019 and unlike all the experts that predicted Kawhi would be a Laker, I will gladly own up to any faulty predictions.  Without ado, here are my five Nostradamus takes.

1. A new and non juicy/NE/hazy will make its bow before the year is out

2. “hard” seltzer will decline significantly in both Twitter mentions and sales

3. Openings will be eclipsed by closings by a thin margin

4. 8oz cans will start to make inroads in packaging

5. an intellectual property lawsuit will go to court

The Firkin for December 2013

The year end is usually time to reflect on what has transpired in the past year.  But as fun as my trips to Chicago, Santa Rosa and Portland were this year and despite the many fabulous beers that I had (Just looking at what I rated in 2013 is head spinning) I want to talk briefly about what I am looking forward to in 2014.  It’s OK, it won’t be a Top 10 list.

1. The opening of the Ohana Brewing tasting room in Alhambra which will be near 38 Degrees and Grill ’em All.

2. Getting down to Timeless Pints in Lakewood for the first time. Trying to play catch-up with what I failed to get to this year.

3. More breweries in the pipeline.  Specifically Phantom Carriage. But also Absolution, Sanctum and Bottle Logic too!

4. The second location of Eagle Rock Brewery.  It will be fun to see what type of food pairs with their beers.

5. More Out-of-State breweries entering the L.A. market.  Last year we got Double Mountain and Ninkasi in force.  Looking forward to more from the state above and others as well.

6. The continued growth of the LA Brewers Guild and the LA Beer Bloggers groups.

…and three that I hope to see but are more speculative

1. A San Francisco tap takeover during LA Beer Week fashioned after the LA tap takeover during SF Beer Week.

2. Less IPA’s and more pilsners and Vienna lagers for our warmer climate.

3.  Less beer events so that those that remain are more “event” like and stronger.
