Year of Podcasts – Brew Bloods

Capture
Podcasting is simple to a certain degree. Talk legibly into a microphone and you are halfway home. But it can be devilishly hard to really do it well. After listening to long chunks of a few recent episodes from Brew Bloods, I can hear a duo (Marc & Dustin) that with time and some editing could become a fun podcast listen.

It is a simple beer review show with banter but that banter is a bit meandering. Why people seem afraid of short podcasts is bizarre to me. Brew Bloods episodes are in the hour long region and that is just too much. Most of the ramblings fall a bit flat but a few jokes really hit and had me giggling.

The lack of tightness also shows that the research could be a bit better too. I know they are aiming more for an “everyman” vibe but the episode about Russian River seemed to keep going until they entered territory that they did not know the answers too. For example, they discussed the distribution of Pliny the Elder but had to Google on air about the precise states they were in. They also didn’t know the difference between Younger and Elder. If they had just reviewed the beer and given a bit of backstory, the mistakes would have vanished.

The reviews are solid and it is where the show hits a good stride as the differences develop in what each host likes. I will be interested to see how they develop the podcast because I think a Texas craft beer vantage point is a needed one to hear about.

Year of Podcasts – Beervana

Beervana – The Podcast sprouted just this year and is the team up of an Economics professor from Oregon State University aka the Beeronomist, and Jeff Alworth of the Beervana blog that covers all things Portland beer and beer (and cider) author.

The first podcast covered the topic that nobody really talks about, partygyle brewing.  Covering English beers that we in L.A. don’t really talk or hear about.

# 2 covers an even more obscure topic, ferulic acid rest while # 3 is all about Italian beers.

From the two hosts to the topics, this is a different beast of a beer podcast.

Year of Podcasts – Gastropod

I love reading about the history of beer (and the people saying other people’s history is incorrect) and I love the scientific underpinning of beer.  As of yet, there is no meshing of those two for beer in the land of podcasts but over on Gastropod, you can find a lot of information that can be taken back to our interaction with craft beer.

Especially this podcast that goes into detail about natural and artificial flavors and designer yeast…

Year of Podcasts – Tales of the Cask

Tales_Web_Head_top-03

Here is the 4th beer-y podcast of the year.  And thanks to the power of the interwebs, we can listen to Tales of the Cask in L.A. even though they are based in North Carolina.

The strong point of the podcast, for me is the news section.  Episode 100 even had shout-outs to Monkish Brewing and to LA Weekly!  Maybe I just picked the right episode to listen in on.  The main section of their triple digit podcast was with Lagunitas which had some good nuggets of the Petaluma brewery lore and some “scarce” beers.  The pace could have been picked up and the questions more advanced for my taste.  Primarily because I have already read the Tony Magee book, I felt ahead of the game.  I wanted more info on the Chicago brewery and other brewing topics.  But then a recent podcast with Anchor Brewing was much tighter (and again mentioned L.A.) and the beer talk was more on point with more details.

Overall the podcast is too long for me though.  But I like the format and the people.  Nice distinct voices and good commentary.  Smart folks.  If packaged in 30 minutes, I would enjoy it more.
