Mission Inn and Christmas

There are Christmas lights and then there are Christmas LIGHTS. And the Mission Inn in Riverside has the latter. So my better half and I decided to spend the holiday at the massive hotel that takes up a large block and is a busy destination with food pop-ups all through the promenade that makes up a part of the Riverside Arts and Historical district.

The first drinks spot was BeerFarm at the Riverside Food Lab food hall near the Mission Inn. The spot has a nice variety over their nearly 20 taps. There was not anything local to the city but I was able to find a few choices and I went with a DIPA from Pure Project.

Before I checked out the two bars at the hotel, I made another close by stop. A taproom location of Route 30 Brewing which I had not had a beer from before. There were a limited amount of offerings but my choice of a dark Czech lager was really good and great to have while waiting for rain to arrive.

The Mission Inn had a bit of a disappointing beer menu. One bar is a multi-purpose space, the tequila bar looks great but the two times that I poked my head in, there was no one inside and no one manning the bar. A quick witted thief could have snared a bottle and left with no one the wiser.

The Presidential Lounge is the best choice but them prices is high. Since it was the holiday season, I was hoping to see a special cocktail or two. But none was to be had. Over the days there I had to different spins on an Old Fashioned. I had the Corn Silk version made with Nixta liquor de Elote and then the George Bush with Fernet. Both were just fine but just didn’t have a special kick or notes to it especially with plus $20 charge.

The better option is down the prom is a classy restaurant The State which did have special holiday cocktail, an egg nog riff, Coquito with coconut and rum. It was great and literally $10 cheaper. They have whiskey Wednesdays too with Happy Hour choices which made me want to re-visit.

Twisted

At issue with many RTD (ready to drink) cocktails is that you lose freshness and gain shelf stability. Fresh fruit and fresh juices and tinctures really brighten a drink. And some RTD cocktails have little tricks up their sleeve to re-create that just mixed feel.

The Glenlivet has an Old Fashioned in a bottle that when you first open it, releases the ingredients into the bottle. Of course, that means the sooner you drink the bottle, the better it will be but it is refreshing to see a classy brand make the effort to give that just made moment.

Guinness is Old Fashioned

Guinness and their Open Gate brewery in Maryland have done quite a bit of experimenting, most of which stays on their taps. This holiday season though, an Old Fashioned cocktail beer will have a bigger distribution footprint.

I am a sucker for a cocktail beer and this is the perfect time for this particular cocktail.

A Smog City Duo

Smog City Brewing has been a big proponent of 1% for the Planet and their next beer in community impact series benefits The Bay Foundation.  It is Forgotten Forest Hazy IPA.  Buy a 4-pack to help the environment.

As much as charity beers are my favorites, Smog has another beer coming soon that intrigues me even more, ” The creative masterminds (mad scientists?) behind our Wood Cellar collection of beers have done it again! With Dubbel Old Fashioned, our latest Wood Cellar beer, they’ve pushed the boundaries on what a beer can be.”

Spire # 2

Count me as a fan of the OG New Belgium Oakspire and now I can compare that one with the brand extension Old Fashioned version that is coming to finer beer shoppes. Maybe also compare it to an actual Old Fashioned while I am at it.

String

Old Fashioned and Manhattan’s seem to be popular cocktails to emulate with beer and Allagash has a new beer for the first one, World on a String. Not sold on the abstract label art but Allagash knows barrel-aged so this would be on to put on the buy list.
