A Book & A Beer – This Searing Light, the Sun and Everything Else

It is strange to go back in time and behind the scenes of the musicians that created part of the soundtrack of your teenage years. You sometimes lose the luster of the music to details of private lives. I was a big New Order fan, still am of a range of their music but I did not know how they came to be, their origin story as it were. I got into a slice of Joy Division music and now after the movie Control and the book above, I know more about the people who created the music.

This is not a regular historical account of the Ian Curtis years. It is an oral history arranged in chronological order. All the people involved in the story have their say and you bounce from Bernard (Barney), Peter (Hooky) and Stephen (just Stephen) as the main protagonists as well as the roadies, the manager, the wives and girlfriends and music reviews.

This oral history style is popular on websites talking about films and TV and works to an extent here but I do wish there was more historical data in-between to add some context to the matter. But as a piece of the record (pun intended), it does add to the knowledge base of the band.

I have three ideas as to what to drink with this book. First, find some British cask ale and immerse yourself in Manchester of the late 1970’s. Yorkshire Square and MacLeod’s would be the L.A. options.

Second there is an anecdote in the book about drinking Duvel so that would work and probably get you in the mindset of the devil. And lastly, the new Leaves of Grass series from Bell’s would provide the needed poetry that great music has when it is really working.

A Beer & A Podcast – Punch up the Jam

If you want to deep dive analyze a song, oh and you would like to do it with lots of humor and with two good friends with great rapport, well then Punch Up the Jam.

Miel Bredouw & Demi Adejuyigbe are your hosts and they are funny as hell. The only issue with this podcast is that you WILL have the songs stuck in your head. The format is simple. The duo pores over each song. Sometimes line by line. Sometimes you get to hear the isolated lyrics or other instrumentation. Once the song is over, they do their “punched up” version. Then you get song recommendations at the end.

Past songs that I highly recommend are:
Doobie Bros. – What a Fool Believes
Guns & Roses – Welcome to the Jungle
The Cure – Friday I’m in Love

Boulevard The Jam would be and excellent choice to drink while listening or you can grab one of the Dogfish Head music series. On a local note, if on tap, Mumford Brewing usually has an IPA with music connections or they may even have their Saison du Miel, a honey saison.

A Beer & A Podcast – Lost Notes

L.A. is blessed with two large NPR stations. KPCC broadcasting from Pasadena and the music-centric KCRW from Santa Monica.

That is the segue to this month’s podcast, Lost Notes.

Basically it is the stories behind the music. I groaned when I saw that one was about the oldie Louie, Louie but that was a seriously fascinating look at a song and how it got stuck in our collective heads. The fact that one version became famous despite being poorly done is amazing.

Later shows delve into Johnny Cash, Captain Beefheart and New Edition. Eclectic to say the least.

And to drink? Well if you type eclectic, music and beer into Google, I bet that Dogfish Head would come up in the top 5, so look for one of their music collaboration beers or look for their Mixed Media wine/beer hybrid and learn some music and beer history.

Year of Podcasts -1 Beer 1 Song

Now this is what I’m talking about. Two dudes in Georgia with humor with a cool concept.  One Beer – One Song.

They attempt to focus on one beer and pair it with one song. Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin with comedy from Jake Johannsen or an IPA with Florence + the Machines. image

It is fun and fast and you get to hear the opinions of people and not just random nattering. They have compared vise to gueuze.  Hop Hunter vs. Lagunitas and more and you get some music to listen to while you sip your beer.

#BPLA @Music & Books

So this month, I have two fun pieces in Beer Paper LA.  Fun because it combined my love of reading and my old high school music memories.  So, if you haven’t picked up the latest issue of BPLA, DO IT!  And read my stuff first…..
