Terpene Time

I am way too square to know much about marijuana but the little that I have smelt was not to my liking.  But noted hop maven Stan Hieronymus has written about a new product, so I will be interested to see what Abstrax Tech, and their new hop division already makes with hop products named Pineapple Express and King Louie XIII.

Cannabis notes moving into hops may bring some interesting aromas and flavors but they could also overwhelm if not in balance.  Will be on the lookout for Los Angeles breweries using it, more than likely in small batches.

The Firkin for April 2022

Every year April heralds Easter and then 4/20. And boy, am I not on the CBD or THC or TLC bandwagon. All the Snoop Dog memes, the warmed over munchies craving jokes make April 20th a day to avoid social media.

To me cannabis and beer is like stuffing cheese into the crust of the pizza, overkill. What actual flavor does cannabis add? I do not know. I have read about chocolate with marijuana, candy with marijuana, water with marijuana and yes, even pizza with marijuana and I have not seen what it adds to the experience.

This is no anti-weed screed, just a reminder that if you are adding an ingredient to a beer, that ingredient better add something to the overall drinking experience. I had a saison that included lemon and vanilla recently. The creaminess imparted by the vanilla played extremely well with the citric acidity, bringing out the best aspects of both while also taking the edges off of both.

And that is what any CBD/THC addition should do in a perfect world.

Weed Meet Beer

First I want you to read this highly entertaining article, OK, now that you are back, are you more or less likely to buy a weed infused beverage?

I was on the no side and that article did nothing to move the needle for me. Then again, I am merely a very little curious about the whole edible and drinkable section of this possible business niche.

For me, it comes back to wanting to enjoy a drink. I don’t drink to get buzzed or drunk. I overwhelmingly drink beer but I will indulge in spirits and wine but chasing a high is not for me. And when I want to enjoy a glass of Pinot Noir or a G&T, that is enough for me. I don’t need weed if the drink in front of me is tasty. And besides whatever mind altering aspects do appear seem to me to be contradictory or just an additional layer.

Toss in the fact that I would have to specifically go to a dispensary to find, that it won’t be at a local bottle/can shop, and this becomes something that will operate in a different world than the one I frequent.

I still believe that the whole let’s make a product alcoholic or lets make a product THC filled are just edge products. The frontier for marijuana is probably down the medical path to my guesstimate.

TTB and Weed

No, that is not a new cop buddy movie. Though I will sell the title if wanted. It is re: a recent memo from the TTB, aka the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

The TTB looks to be warning those who are pushing the leading edge of beer and cannabis. Maybe in part to recent business acquisitions of and by marijuana companies. Maybe due to the fact that labels are showing up that cause red flags to raise up. Either way, my guess is that limited runs of these beers and probably not in to-go packaging is in the future.

The Hop Puns would be Endless

While perusing one of my favorite beer blogs, Beervana.  I ran across this POST about how Goschie Farms in Oregon.  (Which I have had the pleasure of visiting once) is working on mixing the related hops and cannabis.  Oakshire Brewing of Eugene has been the brewing portion of the R&D for what is being called Harlequin Cascade.

Now, will this be a viable hop for market?  I think there are far too many hurdles for that to happen.  Even on a home brewing front.  A. The full U.S. hop market, would not be available.  Some states simply would not allow it. I don’t see home brew shops risking it, even in the more legally lenient states.

The troubles and risks for breweries would stop people as well.  Getting a keg collar would be difficult and getting a label approved would be near impossible.

I applaud the creativity and science of hop cultivating but I don’t see this “growing” bigger.
