If you do not follow the BeervanaBlog, well, you are missing out. Especially if you want to be up to date on hops. Jeff Alworth has done the legwork on new and slightly new hop varietals so that you can sound so much smarter at the bar.
HERE is the extensive round-up. I am the most intrigued by the English and French hops since especially Endeavour and Barbe Rouge.
There are some great websites with hop information on them but recently Hopsteiner the large hop grower/distributor has refreshed its website and added a really helpful snapshot of hop data.
The Hopsteiner’s Hop Varieties Grid has brand new hops photography which helps to visually differentiate the hops, multiple sort levels including by Experimental or Aroma and a handy sheet of information that to this beer blogger was just right without getting too overboard in technical terms. You get an aroma graph, genetic origin, similar hops and other facts. It is easy to use and share which is key.
I would have liked to see them add what blends are normally used with each hop so that you could gain a knowledge of what pairs well but that is a small quibble in what is an excellent website revamp.
Mikkeller has somehow jammed 19 different hop varietals into one beer. Aptly named 19. For the lupulin curious, here is the list with (rounded off) percentages for each of the hops.
Simcoe – 17%
Citra – 15%
Amarillo – 14%
Sorachi Ace – 10
Bravo – 6%
Columbus – 6%
Cluster – 4%
Warrior – 4%
Cascade – 3%
Centennial – 3%
Palisade – 2%
Challenger, Galena, Magnum, Mt. Hood, Tettnanger – 1%
Nugget, Super Galena and Willamette – below 1%
My beer buddy Richard had a sighting of the new Latitude 48 single hop box from Sam Adams. I suggest picking one up. 48 is made up of 5 hop varietals. So this pack showcases each one individually. Hallertau, EKG, Simcoe, Zeus and Ahtanum. Plus the regular 48 that has all included.
I have sampled the Ahtanum (strong with intial citrus taste) and the Simcoe (which is all bitter all the time). I’m saving the Zeus and Hallertau for last.
