Sean Suggests for March 2025

This month let’s head to the farmer’s market and then level up our favorite fruits with wild extras and then amp up that ABV.

Great Notion Double Papaya Shake – 9.1% – “We’re shaking things up with our shake series and switching out those beautiful berries for lots of juicy papaya, passionfruit, and vanilla.”

Cellador Ales Orange Sunshine – 9.4% – “This is our third release of Orange Sunshine, and this vintage features Riesling grapes from Kick On Ranch.” It “is a true beer/wine hybrid with more than just a few grapes thrown into barrels. It’s a 60/40 blend of saison and pressed Riesling and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was just a sparkling orange wine if you tasted it blind.”

The Bruery Strawberry Charm’d – 12.7% – “Let Strawberry Charm’d cast a spell on you with its magical blend of tart strawberry, sweet marshmallow, and graham cracker.”

Cold Kush

Last time that Wayfinder dropped some of their fine beer in L.A., I had their Relapse Cold IPA. And now I can explain what that means to them, it is a hybrid India Pale Lager / Malt Liquor. And now they have teamed with the fan favorite Great Notion on a variant of that variant, named Cold Kush. A hazy with Citra and Strata hops primarily with Galaxy and Cashmere backing up. This beer also has rice and flaked wheat too.  And since L.A. also gets Great Notion on occasion, maybe this beer will show up on shelves.

PDX Peek – Zoiglhaus & Great Notion

Zoiglhaus

I was super excited to go here because of the fact that the brewmaster is a fellow Linfield alum. And the beer did not disappoint. The Cedar Fever was a great combo of light pilsner base with cedar and hops. It really popped and got my trip off to a great start. The Festbier worked well too. Good malt to luxuriate in. The restaurant space left something to be desired. It was cavernous and pretty empty on a Friday afternoon. Also the food was only so-so for Portland.

Great Notion

Well this place was busy. Even some brave souls out on the patio. I had to find a standing room only spot for my taster tray. My favorite was the Contraband Saison despite the rep for the hazy IPA’s. I did check out three of the hazy offerings of the seven listed! Of those Grape Lotion was the most intriguing with a wine grape addition that fought the hops to a draw.
