Open / Shut – Anchor Brewing in Stasis

Some small good news from the crappy Sapporo handling of Anchor Brewing, per the NAGBW, “At the end of September, the National Museum of American History collected the business records and other artifacts from the recently shuttered Anchor brewery to preserve and make them accessible to researchers and the public into the future. The items include tools from the brewhouse and lab, a barrel that transported steam beer to 19th-century taverns, books from Fritz Maytag’s library, and more.”

Plucking those items combined with, the pluck and zeal of former employees and the recent book about Anchor’s history will go a long way to helping unfreeze the actual Steam Beer out of carbonite. More will need to be pried out of Sapporo’s hands if a new age of Anchor is to really happen.

A new Honorific

Screen Shot 2015-08-02 at 12.24.57 PM Anchor Brewing is paying tribute to Fritz Maytag on the labels for their Barrel Ale and they are also paying tribute to their own distilling efforts as well since this beer is aged in their own Anchor Distilling Old Potrero Rye Whiskey barrels as well as on their staves.  You will see this beer on draft and in 12 oz bottles in the future.

Sierra Nevada 30 # 1

Sierra Nevada has really been putting out new stuff left and right. Kellerbier, Life and Limb, Glissade and now the new 30th Anniversary series is under way.

The label reads, “Fritz Maytag, owner of San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Company, is regarded as the founding father of the craft brewing movement. Frtiz agreed to guest brew this very special ale with us in honor of our 30th anniversary. As a nod to the dark ales and stouts that seduced both Fritz and Ken in the early years, we bring you this pioneering stout, a rich and roasted ale, perfect for aging, and worthy of your finest snifter.”
Future collaborators may include Jack McAuliffe of New Albion fame, Fred Eckhardt (who already has a Hair of the Dog beer with his name) and Charlie Papazian, the noted homebrewer.
