Tomorrow morning over at Food GPS, a companion piece to my Central Coast post from a couple weeks back.
What breweries in Northern California are must visits for you?
Is it Russian River or Moonlight?
Sierra Nevada’s massive complex in Chico?
Or do you have some other small spot that needs a light shone upon it?
Let me know below…..
This week instead of pimping out the latest post over on Food GPS. I am going to tell you about the Beer Pro interviews that you can find, yes, on Food GPS. I have interviewed people from breweries far and wide as has Josh (who runs the site) and you get to read about the people behind the beer you have in your glass. Recently I have talked to Wayne from Cigar City, Dave from Dry River and and Rob and Ron from the Limited Release web series. But there are a load of beer pro interviews in the archive.
You can start this week with my interview of A.J. Stoll the brewmaster at Figueroa Mountain Brewing in Buellton and Santa Barbara….
Tomorrow over at Food GPS, my altar ego talks about where he went after leaving the Firestone Walker Invitational…
More details on the beer will be there, but for now, the travelogue….
STOP # 1
Barrelhouse Brewing in Paso Robles
STOP # 2
Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. in Buellton
Oh, and one stop that I missed that you will just have to read about tomorrow.
One name, Warren Buffett. He has flown into Hawthorne and now so should you for Eureka! Burger. Check out my review in tomorrow’s piece over at Food GPS.
The entry to some really great burgers and plenty of taps and cans of craft beer.

If you haven’t figured out that you should buy tickets for the 2014 edition, then tomorrow’s Food GPS column about the individual beers surely will.
But here is my list of beers that I wish I had sampled but did not:
Three Floyds – Dreadnaught IPA
Sun King – Batch 777 tripel
Pizza Port – Beer Hunter Belgian golden collaboration with Automatic Brewing
Odell – Loose Leaf hoppy session
Cigar City – Invasion pale ale
Braufactum – Colonia Kolsch

Just not enough drinking time.
Earlier in May, I gave a somewhat subtle hint about an event in the works with Beer Belly. And as we get closer to the event on June 9th and the beer list gets tightened up, I will broadcast what will be pouring but tomorrow over on Food GPS, I will give a little rationale behind why I am focusing on the “lighter” side of beer.
First is another reason (aside from beer) that should encourage you to come out to Beer Belly and talk with me and other beer lovers.
I will be raffling off a pair of prizes to those who surrender their e-mail address to me. I will pick winners a couple days (of recovery) from the event. So if you love being in the running for craft beer swag then come on down.
One beer that I really hope I get is Pivo Pils from Firestone-Walker. A light beer with a Saphhir hop bite to it. But if you can’t wait then you have two Firestone events where you might be able to grab a pint before June 9th…..
Tonight – May 29th Firestone is doing a trivia/BBQ night at Kings Row featuring Parabola and Sucaba. Night starts at 6pm trivia starts at 630pm. Prizes will be given out to the top 3 teams of 4.
and then on May 30th. Firestone pint night at West 4th and jane….featuring Solace for the summer release. Keep the glass while supplies last.
This week’s Beer of the Week over on Food GPS is from California’s Brouwerij West. And instead of giving extra tasting notes or talk of ingredients, I thought I would focus on the odd but endearing labels that they have on their bottles….
What do you think of their artwork?
Tomorrow on FoodGPS, I give you some “special” christmas shopping ideas the and the beer and homework is from Anchor Brewing in San Francisco. It is the yearly tradition of Our Special Ale. The holiday ale with a different tree on the label and a slightly different recipe each year.
Recently, I did a vertical tasting of this beer starting with the 2008 version and going through to 2012.
2008
Very frothy pour with an espresso head. Aroma hints that this one may have passed prime tasting time. An old ale background with a touch of sour creeping in. Very British ale tasting.
2009
Another frothy beer. Both were stored standing up so I don’t think it was my cellaring technique. But this one had a much lighter head to it. Some minor roast notes and a little whisper of pine. That same sourness and apple cider taste is evident in this one as in 2008.
2010
This one poured better. More Belgian-y. Good sparkle to this one in comparison to the flatter beers form ’08 and ’09. More coffee acidity here. Again the tree and pine notes are only faint and way in the background.
2011
Dark with a brown ale backbone. Not much spice or flavor in the 2011. Even tastes a little thin. If the others did not stand up to aging then I fear for this one.
2012
Pours dark black. Almost a Dr. Pepper type of aroma. Flavor has a burnt quality to it. Body is light and it is quite sparkly. Flavor does linger on the palate.
