Four Seasons of Firestone

On this Friday, September 13th at Culina inside the Four Seasons Hotel.

The Wheels of Firestone

Untitled

“Join us for celebration of one of the world’s top craft breweries: Firestone Walker. This four course dinner takes place on Friday, September 13th at 7:30pm in the Private Dining Room at Culina, Modern Italian restaurant, located in the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.

One of Firestone Walker’s Brewers has selected four unique offerings to pair with our signature crudo scallops, pork sausage, braised short ribs and of course, dessert. Plus, Firestone will be providing a SECRET tasting of a beer that BeerAdvocate judges awarded a perfect ‘100’ score. Don’t miss this!

The Wheels of Firestone Beer Dinner at Culina Modern Italian is priced at $65++ per person (not including tax or gratuity). Reserve your seat early and enjoy this beer-lover’s dream evening!”

Firestone events are reliably great so this might be a great way to get a leg up on L.A. Beer Week.

Double Barrel on the Venice canals

While I was whiling the beer hours away at various spots in Portland, some major SoCal news hit.  Not that I would have scooped anybody but I would feel remiss if I didn’t weigh in on Firestone Walker’s announcement that they are heading to a location in Venice which depending on traffic may still be as far away as Firestone Walker in Buellton.

fw venice

So it won’t be perched on the canals.  Probably not enough parking for that. But this is where it will be, “The property is located on West Washington Boulevard near Lincoln Boulevard. Adam and David selected this site after more than two years of searching. It’s not a main street or restaurant row, but it’s still accessible.”

The goal being to “establish a third leg along the coast, complementing our existing locations in Paso Robles and Buellton.”  I am all for Firestone being here but it wasn’t as if I felt neglected by them at all.  Part of the joy of visiting them was the excuse to visit the majestic new BarrelWorks in Buellton or hit up Paso and the surrounding sights.  Now will people take them for granted?  To a certain extent, some beers like Solace and regular Union Jack and DBA get short shrift in the rush for barrel aged products and double this and that.

Best case scenario is this new spot becomes the hub for the off-the-wall events like Deconstructed or Walker’s Wild Ride that have been high points in my beer experiences in LA.  Hopefully it can be a center for food and beer pairings.  Sour seminars and the like would be great too.

The best sign about this move is that our fair city (adopted or native) is getting the attention of breweries.

Just not enough drinking time.

Firestone-Walker Invitational (the recap)

Firestone-Walker-Invitational-Beer-Fest-2012

As threatened here is my recap of the Firestone-Walker Invitational that was held on Saturday……

With a beer stained shirt, I left the 2013 Firestone-Walker Invitational Beer Festival dizzy from the variety of beers and breweries on display and maybe the triple digit heat too.

The Mid-State Fairgrounds was hopping with crowds attracted by an impressive worldwide brewery list with beers that are rare within miles of their home breweries, let alone seen in California. Dark Lord from Indiana’s Three Floyds or Hunaphu from Peoples Choice winning brewery, Cigar City from Florida.

Both highly rated beers and both excellent but in my opinion, three others made my Best in Show List (plus an honorable mention in Tipo Pils from Birrificio Italiano).

#3 – Dos Osos IPA from Revolution Brewing. A collaborative hop bomb between the 3 year old Chicago brewery and Firestone-Walker. Was super fresh with a great bouquet.

#2 – Nefarious DIPA from Boneyard Brewing. For a big DIPA this (again very fresh) Double was light and nimble.

# 1 – Prickly Passion Saison aged in Peach Whiskey barrels from the venerable New Belgium. My first beer of the day and one that struck a chord that I measured all the rest of the days beers on. Had a bright fruit note that balanced with a smooth and light barrel flavor.

OK, on to my beer festival check list:
water: plentiful (they also had cool zone blowers and misters at most stations to keep things cool)

food: plentiful (and free with admission) I certainly enjoyed the cupcakes but you could really do some great beer pairings.

crowds: There were long lines but that was to be expected. You could easily move about the fairgrounds and if one line was too long another fantastic brewery was close by.

Considering the heat and the massive beer geek popularity of the beers on hand this was well-run and smooth operation. (Which was not a surprise to me)

This will be an annual pilgrimage for me.

Earlier in May, I gave a somewhat subtle hint about an event in the works with Beer Belly.  And as we get closer to the event on June 9th and the beer list gets tightened up, I will broadcast what will be pouring but tomorrow over on Food GPS, I will give a little rationale behind why I am focusing on the “lighter” side of beer.

First is another reason (aside from beer) that should encourage you to come out to Beer Belly and talk with me and other beer lovers.

I will be raffling off a pair of prizes to those who surrender their e-mail address to me.  I will pick winners a couple days (of recovery) from the event.  So if you love being in the running for craft beer swag then come on down.

One beer that I really hope I get is Pivo Pils from Firestone-Walker.  A light beer with a Saphhir hop bite to it.  But if you can’t wait then you have two Firestone events where you might be able to grab a pint before June 9th…..

Tonight – May 29th Firestone is doing a trivia/BBQ night at Kings Row featuring Parabola and Sucaba. Night starts at 6pm trivia starts at 630pm. Prizes will be given out to the top 3 teams of 4.

and then on May 30th. Firestone pint night at West 4th and jane….featuring Solace for the summer release. Keep the glass while supplies last.

Parabola 2013

Earlier today, I gave you a shopping list with three excellent choices to take to your local beer shoppe, and now here is a fourth that you had better pick up from Firestone-Walker….

our_beers_PARABOLA 2013

I can only parrot back this quote that I found on the press release from the brewery, ““This is the best Parabola we’ve ever made,” Brynildson says.”

What else do you need?  Seriously?  Buy two or three if you are on a limited beer budget because these will age beautifully.  Or find a tap house that is hosting Firestone-Walker and get there when they open.

Here is the description if you need more impetus to buy it, “As always, brewing this massive barrel-aged Russian imperial oatmeal stout continues to be a challenge—“It’s like extracting liquid from a big oatmeal cookie,” says Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. The recipe is unchanged, but the 2013 vintage comes with a fresh twist on the barrel-aging front, specifically the incorporation of retired bourbon barrels from Four Roses Distillery in Kentucky.”
