Review – Sommerweiße from Erdinger

I was intrigued by the bottle of Erdinger Sommerweiße that I saw on the shelf, so I grabbed a bottle to see what it would be like and I was let down. This supposed wheat – Hefe was sparkly and tasted like a sweet tart candy with a little metallic tinge at the end. The image wasn’t helpful at all as it poured a hazy brownish orange. It was nowhere near hoppy and just tasted weird. I can usually trust Erdinger to give me German flavors but this did not.

World Cup and German Beer

2014FIFAWorldCuplogo2-FIFA

Brazil is the host of the World Cup which runs from June 12 through July 13.  And since Brazilian Craft beer isn’t super available here in LA.  You may have to choose a Group of Death themed viewing party at the German restaurant and beer garden, Wirtshaus.

As they declare in a recent press release, “In support of Wirtshaus’ owners’ now-dual heritage, Wirtshaus will be airing all U.S. and Germany matches in the group stage of the World Cup, and all games after, in the elimination rounds.

Their will be plenty of TV screens to watch the games and they will open early on game-days.  Plus they will offer “a soccer skills contest – known in Germany as the goal-scoring game, “Torwand”. Contestants who make six of six consecutive shots, will win a free boot of Erdinger beer.” Erdinger being the sponsor of the festivities.

Since I am a World Cup fan, I will be posting more viewing and craft beer locations as they become available.

Sept-OctoFest

Events are starting to pile up in anticipation of the 4th L.A. Beer Week and here is one to add a Teutonic twist to both September and October.

“Los Angeles German restaurant and beer garden, Wirtshaus, will be celebrating Oktoberfest from Saturday, September 22 through Saturday, October 20, 2012. The official Oktoberfest “kick-off” at Wirtshaus is 3:00 PM on September 22, when a surprise German celebrity guest will tap the restaurant’s ceremonial Oktoberfest keg, which will be “on the house”; guests who are seated and purchase an entrée, drink for free from that first keg until it runs dry.

Wirtshaus’ Oktoberfest plans will include regularly-changing food and drink specials during their four-week celebration (specials will be posted in the restaurant, and also announced on their Facebook and Twitter pages); live traditional German music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the celebration; and accompanying Erdinger-sponsored décor and giveaways.
