Smog City Crowlers

I ordered up some can, bottle and crowler goodies from Smog City and now is the time to give my thoughts on …..

Starting with the crowler of Practicing Perfection Pale Ale which pours a dark orange color. I get a bit of Sweet Tart in the aroma along with some orange zest. The juicy bitterness really lingers on the palate. Getting a bit of lime and grapefruit here as well.

Next up is the wordplay of Mosaic Me Crazy. The crowler cracks open with a really nice aroma.  Bright and citrusy.  Clear yellow in color. Pear notes and some lime lemon citrus.  Strong bitterness.  Crisp.

Trademark Crowlers

Took a Saturday trip to buy some Long Beach beers from Trademark Brewing and here is what I got….

Origins has that signature haze to it though it is a bit milky orange.  Very grassy, woodsy character.  Soft but not very hazy soft. Almost has a white wine nose to it. Getting some pear notes. A weird bit of cattiness too.

Next up is Hat Trick, a Belgian Tripel, a big over 9% beer. I like this beer but it does seem to be a Belgian that is holding back the full effect. It is missing a little spice. The phenols are quite muted. The alcohol sneaks up on you. The cheeks start getting warm. I just wish it had a little extra zip to it. Maybe an herb or some spice to add an extra dimension.

Double Crowler Review – Surfridge

My pre-order Friday and pick-up Saturday routine went to El Segundo for a Surfridge Brewing Co. crowler sale. I went one IPA and one stout.

Outlaw Unicorn is objectively a great beer name and the beer had a couple of different levels to it.  At first, it was a dense rye-ish IPA that was closer to British styled than West Coast, but as it warmed, there was a new flavor note in the form of orange pekoe tea. I found the latter to be the more enjoyable.

The Gnome had a nice vanilla / milk chocolate combo but for a stout was pretty light and watery. No fan of the pastry stout am I but this could have used less effervescence and more heft.

Review – Crowlers from Brouwerij West

I made a drive while the roads were still clear by LA standards to pick-up some crowlers from Brouwerij West. I went overboard on the beers chosen. Going for a certain theme.

Little Baby Satan – You can smell the citrus right away. Very Orange Julius. Pours a super hazy light orange/yellow. Thick tasting.  Getting a creamy note followed by a pillowy bitterness. This hits all the hazy hallmarks.

Stigmata – Orange pekoe tea smell.  Nice bitterness level.  Floral notes here as well. Getting some grape flavor as well Really diggin the experimental hops used here, quite a complex profile. . Bright and clear in color.

Aftermath – Part 3

The American shipping and distribution system is amazing. You can get something in under an hour. But as we have seen with the run on toilet paper, it doesn’t take much to hobble that system.

This will extend to breweries, and not just with ingredients but with items like the beer container. Kegs are not in vogue. But boy, the amount of Crowlers and sixteen ounce cans needed are rising higher.

But that means that a system built for just in time delivery and expecting only a certain quantity of sales now has to pivot to new market conditions and then will have to change again when this is all over.

Meanwhile, the growler, which has completely lost favor, has had a tiny renaissance as breweries have opened up the taps to any container that they can put beer in.

Supply and demand is in cans already and it will soon be hitting other ingredients too.

Yeast and Two Crowlers

If you reside in California, sheltering in your place, then you can order up White Labs beer! The prices are a little steep but consider it an educational expense. You can get a pair of crowlers of the same beer except for one, kinda major difference, the yeast. They have some hazy IPAs on their menu that would be really interesting to compare. If you are home brewing during this time, you can also purchase a pack that includes yeast!

Get Your Fill of Crowlers

A crowler would probably break through even the strongest of stocking but a gift card booklet redeemable for crowlers would not…

…and since the New Original beers are fairly close to everyone, it is a great gift for anyone here in Los Angeles.

Tacos & Two

Simmzy’s will be celebrating their 2nd Anniversary with (3) new brews including and taco pairings at their Burbank brewing location. They will have the obligatory “2nd Anniversary Hazy IPA” that is part of a take home 3-pack of their anniversary beer line-up in… crowlers.   The festivities are on Friday, June 7 starting at 4pm. To have your crowlers waiting for you, head HERE.

El Crowl-gundo

El Segundo beer needs to be drunk fresh. There is a reason why they have a whole Day 1 program of getting their bottles to market the same day that they are filled. That is why they date code. Now, they have added crowlers to the mix to add another option for the West Coast IPA fan.

Congregation Crowlers

Looks like the Congregation Ales mini-chain has added a to-go option. But only from their Azusa brewpub.

Crowlers of selected beers will now come in 32oz cans emblazoned with their logo and will come in handy since they generally do draft only. Now you can take their beers to parties or wherever you crowl.
