Review – Yakima Fresh IPA from Common Space Brewery

Still fresh hop beers out there though the clock is certainly ticking on them. Before that buzzer rings, I wanted to review a local version from Common Space Brewery, Yakima Fresh! with hops from Carpenter Ranches and Sauve and Son.

YF! pours a real clear dark yellow and it is quite delicate overall. The aroma is fairly muted, no big whiff of lupulin, more a light touch of lemon. The flavor follows that course with lemon and grassy notes intermingling but only lightly bitter. It is interesting that once Common Space got the fresh hops, they were pelletized by hand at the brewery and then used as dry hopping.

Review – Oktoberfest Biers from Common Space

I don’t normally review draft beers because the vibes of a taproom may influence me but since it is Festbier season, I am making an exception for Common Space who had their Oktoberfest beers on draft, such as…

Now the bottom two beers are year rounders but that left five seasonals to partake of. So I started with the Passive Perception Dunekl which was a dark amber color and had mini espresso head. It was thin and sweet with a fruitcake cherry note to it. On a cooler fall day it might have been too slight but in humid SoCal it was fine.

The Rauch, Smoke on the Lager (which many a brewery has used as a beer name) had a nice medium hit of smoke. Almost a Carolina BBQ. That smoke faded though and despite not being a being a big rauch fan, was hoping for more.

Here are some of my choices for L.A. Beer Week as of today. I will have tried to pick one for each day ( still need ones for the 17th and 18th ) but there is not a lot of choices on the website. Either the number of events is really low or they are not being added to the main site.

The Beer Search Party reviews We Love LA beers – Part 6

There has been such a fantastic outpouring of support for Los Angeles by breweries far and wide in the wake of the devastating wildfires of this past January.

The charity program spearheaded by Common Space Brewery has garnered quite a bit of support from California and the rest of the Fractured States of America.

Here are my thoughts on the latest beers that I have had in the worldwide series…

Crowns & Hops with Malibu Brewing – this is my second C&H beer from this charity series and it has a little more sadness attached since the other brewery is Malibu Brewing who are so near the destruction.  It is a West Coast IPA that pours a really light orange color with hints of yellow.  The aroma is quite an astringent lemon and the flavor follows to an extent before going into pine territory.  Very punchy and not for the fearful of hops.

There Does Not Exist – love the little E character from the brewery name logo moved to the We in We Love L.A..  There is a bit of a sweet tart candy aroma in this lager from SLO.  That shows in the flavor as well before the malt notes sneak in all quiet like.  This has more of a pilsner snap to it.  Overall, I do like it.

An Uncommon Faire

Dig out your metal knight costume because Common Space Brewery in Hawthorne is celebrating their 7th anniversary with a Renaissance Fair to remember.

Don’t know if there will be serving big turkey legs on Saturday, April 26 from 12PM-12AM but there will be Jousting, Tarot cards and of course some beer releases as well.

Heart

I have not written about the terrible fires that popped up seemingly everywhere earlier this month in the Los Angeles area. Mostly because it is so sad and disheartening to see such catastrophe some of it closer to where I reside in Glendale than wildfire has ever been.

And Los Angeles was already barely able to build enough as it was, especially when it comes to affordable housing for all economic levels. Now rents and home prices will push even higher than they already were.

But this is not a housing blog, though it kind of is, because the more people that can find housing at a price point that isn’t 75% of take-home pay, the more people will go out and buy good craft beer.

Anyway, the preceding paragraphs are prelude to the actual point of the fact that Common Space Brewery has stepped up to rally our remaining L.A. breweries into a special beer to help the rebuild cause, We Love LA will be showing soon up from over 50 California breweries participating and close to 10 from out of state as well, and I will be grabbing from wherever in financial support. I strongly suggest that we make this beer a complete sell-out.

Norm!

Collaborations that I would not have predicted.  Norm’s Restaurants, an L.A. landmark (at least sign wise, never been to one) has teamed with Common Space Brewery for a house IPA.

22 locations and counting mostly in Los Angeles and Orange County.  But their menu shows no signs of alcohol at all, plus diner food and IPA doesn’t immediately scream a great pairing.
