From Outside the U.S. – Part 1 – Duvel and Brazil

I am a big fan of Duvel’s barrel-aged program.  And the next one is a very unique choice.   Going the historical route with Brazilian cachaça from Brazil. Sorta like a rum relative.

Duvel snagged over 400 oak cachaça barrels for their cellars and after 8 months of aging achieved what they say is Duvel but with a “lively fruit punch, which then expands festively with notes of oak, dried nuts and vanilla.”

If I do see the Duvel Barrel Aged, The Brasil Rum Edition. You know I will pick it up.

From Brazil Via Japan

If you know an adventuresome bottle shop or one that sells more than just a couple foreign beers, you should look for cans from Japas Cervejaria.

It is a “woman-run, Japanese-Brazilian brewery based in Brazil. Founded in 2015 by Maíra Kimura, Yumi Simada and Fernanda Ueno, each of their creations is the result of a dive into their ancestry. This amalgamation of beer and history is rich in aromas, flavors and culture, with recipes that celebrate the union between Brazil and Japan in a contemporary way, without clichés or pre-established ideas.”

The founders are touring the US, I don’t see any LA stops but we are marked as one of their markets.

It there a cleat in there too?

I love the World Cup.  Yes it is as corrupt (if not more) than the Olympics (which I hate) but the game is on the pitch.  No heartwarming stories.  No cutting away to curling or synchronized swimming.  You get world class soccer. And no Bob Costas and his pink eye.

And now there is a beer for the occasion (if you are fond of AB) Brahma Selecao Especial which uses barley grown on the pitch of the Granja Comar training centre. Home of the Brazilian National team!

Normally, the barley would get beat to shit by soccer cleats and bouncing balls but the grounds were being renovated and while that was going on the ground was put to an extra use not normally associated with the Beautiful Game.

I am sure that it won’t taste good so I am glad it probably won’t show up in the states.  I am sure that I can find some beer to drink while watching the US team play in the Group of Death.

(Special thanks to Erika Taylor for pointing this out to me)

Way Umburana Lager

If Stephen Beaumont says this about a beer: “Umburana Lager, at 9.6% alcohol and aged on Brazilian umburana wood chips to lightly tannic, vanilla-spiced smoothness, is really the one to watch here.”

Then I’m guessing it has to be good.

World Cup + World Beer – Portugal

TODAY: PORTUGAL V. BRAZIL

What a way to end the group stage. This should be a titanic battle. Will Portugal step it up or will Brazil prevail?

No better way to end than with Super Bock!
super
Super Bock is a Portuguese brand of strong pale lager from the Unicer brewery. A bit conflicting in the description but when in Portugal.
