Hi and Lo

There is a plethora of liquor stores in the Southland. Some nowadays even posterize their windows with the well-funded craft brands in an attempt to lure unsuspecting craft beer fans.

But a new store coming to Culver City with the old fashioned name of Hi-Lo wants to reinvent that model.

“Hi-Lo offers a spectrum of modest as well as boutique liquors, from affordable, quality Kentucky whiskeys, to small-batch wines and seasonal cult beers. Plus, a revolving selection of uniquely curated, heritage sundries.”

Their initial beer list includes locals like Dogtown, Homage and Eagle Rock with out of town favorites like 21st amendment and Founders. You can build your own 6-pack or peruse the cocktail accessories and stock your bar at home. Then pick up some bites to go along with your beverages.

BrewDad’s got a Beer Store!

unnamed
I met the illustrious and boisterous BrewDad at the first Beer Bloggers Conference and I have met up with him every twice in a while through the years since and now he has parlayed a job at Top Rung Brewing into owning his own beer bar & bottle shop.

In early July, he will take over NW Caps & Taps of Bonney Lake and it will become the shorter and sweeter named, BrewDad’s of Bonney Lake.

Next time you are in the upper part of Washington set Siri, Waze, Google Maps to Bonney Lake and WA-410 to get some BrewDad hospitality and a beer of course.

Buzz Wine and Beer

I slowly am visiting all of the new and (at this point, not so new) L.A. beer locales. And last Tuesday, I finally checked in at Buzz Wine and Beer in Downtown L.A.

The Beer is just inside the front door to the left and all chilled as well with many a style including what I purchased, Adnam’s Broadside and Grand Teton’s Snarling Badger Berliner Weisse as well as locals like Eagle Rock and Golden Road.

And if you are not grabbing to-go, you can also take a seat at their small beer and gaze upon the taps.

I went with the new 2012 Hoptimum from Sierra Nevada which to my palate tasted better than I remember from the past.

Good to have another addition to not only Downtown LA but to the L.A. Craft Beer scene in whole.

Best Damn Beer Shop

To me, the sign of a healthy craft beer scene is that all markets are covered. Breweries from large to small, beer bars dedicated to the breweries in the region, restaurants that serve up the good stuff and beer stores.

Which brings us to the Best Damn Beer Shop. Located in the Super Jr Market in San Diego. They carry the locals from Alesmith to Lightning and do tastings as well.

Looks like a great place to do some one-stop SD Beer shopping.

Sunset Beer Company – Interview

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the driving forces behind a new and new kind of craft beer addition to the Los Angeles brew scene.

John Nugent and Drew Vonah took the time to speak with me about how to create an atmosphere for beer exploration, their plans for the Echo Park space and what kind of beer they drink.

Sunset Beer Company will be a 2,000 square foot craft beer store with a few tap handles in the revitalized beer area of Echo Park.

The seed that sprouted into this new venture starts with their other establishment, the Colorado Wine Company. This Eagle Rock shop is my go-to spot for wine tasting. It is comfortable and the wines chosen are invariably challenging to my beginners wine palate.

That same welcoming feel is what is being aimed for with the new space that is still under construction. They are looking to be a comfortable place to explore the 500 beers they plan on having. It will not be a loud, male-centric cave.

What I like though is that John and Drew are coming from a background in wine as a starting point. But they both have a love of beer and seem excited that the same passion for wine exists in the beer world. They are fans of Eagle Rock Brewing (as am I) and have that “beer da vivre” that I love to see.

The plan is to open next year on a date to be named later. In the meantime, visit the wine version and imagine what a great addition the Sunset Beer Company will be to the Los Angeles beer scene.

A Short Walk

What is better than a new place to buy beer?

A new place to buy beer that I can walk to!

BevMo is coming to Glendale, California. I know they were already in place in next door Pasadena and in next door Burbank but now I can truly walk for 10 minutes and be at the front door.

Oh and they open TODAY!

Beer Cartel

It can be daunting just to keep up with the craft beer in your own backyard.  But keep in mind that the beer revolution is not just happening here.

It is also happening in places as far flung as Australia.  That’s where resources like the Beer Cartel come into play.

You can buy rare (to us) beer, join a beer of the month club or just learn more about the scene in Australia. If you don’t check it out today, it has been added to the links section for future viewing.

Another Beer Store!

Not until spring of 2011 but still. This is great news. LA DOES have a craft beer thirst. All of these new ventures prove it. And as a bonus the Sunset is fairly close to me!

I have done wine tastings at the CoWineCo and they are well presented and with whimsy. They really do wine well there. It is the type of place that I have taken my parents, my younger sister-in-law and people inbetween. So I am optimistic that this place will have some of that same spirit with a beer spin.

Here are some of the particulars…“Sunset Beer Co. is a partnership between Jennifer and John of CoWineCo and Jenna and Drew VonAh. The concept will be quite familiar to you – a retail shop with a tasting area. But the retail shop will be twice the size of CoWineCo featuring many hundreds of bottles of beer from around the globe (all properly chilled of course), and the tasting area will have taps instead of rows of wine glasses (but for you grape-centric die-hards, yes there will be wine available as well).”

Buck-it Tuesday

Vancouver Washington is not known for beer. It has Portland across the river and it’s namesake in Canada has a nice little scene too.

But there is a gem that needs visiting. It is on my Beer List and my next trip north I am going to By The Bottle. And there is one cool reason why. (As if the great bottle selection is not enough of a draw).

They have a relatively new tap room! And on Tuesdays, they “…plug in the electronic ice BUCKet and sample a beer for a BUCK. This is a cool and economic way to try a brand or style you’ve been eying. Why experiment with the whole bottle when you can BUCK-it!?”

And speaking of the tap room, here is a recent list of beers on tap:
Deschutes HOP IN THE DARK CASCADIAN DARK ALE (CDA
Lagunitas Bre wing Co LITTLE SUMPIN’ SUMPIN’ ALE
