Swipe Right

What if you merged the worlds of whale hunters with Tindr? Well, you end up with Brewswap.

It is a craft beer trading app “ that will feature a prominent profile reputation system based on feedback scores as well as the ability to swipe on “for trade” photos from across the country or near your current location.”

Post your FT (For Trade) bottles and cans on the app and then head to your feed to swipe on other FT beers. If the magic happens and both users swipe right, the next phase is to message each other.

What I like: IP Mode
“In-Person mode which is in development, gives users the ability to discover and swipe on other Brewswappers within a nearby radius. This is ideal for those that like to meet up in person as well as people who are attending releases and festivals and want to see fellow Brewswappers in close proximity to them in real time.”

What I don’t like: Claims of troll elimination
“By giving users the ability to swipe and match with each other, Brewswap eliminates trolling and influencing of any kind, allowing for people to connect and iron out details in private without any added pressure.”

Maybe, by simplifying the trading process, users who don’t normally trade might be encouraged to give it a whirl and if that happens, the possibility of the trolls and Whale Bros. might be outnumbered or will leave for the more darker parts of the web.

Beat the Brewmaster

Capture
Trying to topple the Untappd in the craft beer app hierarchy has proven futile but I did hold out hope for the new Beat the Brewmaster app that I recently downloaded and took for a bit of a test drive.

Beat the Brewmaster combines the check-in culture with those “who want to know more about the beer they are drinking.” There are three tabs. Checking in to a beer, overall beer trivia and the brewmaster sensory section.

The general beer trivia from which you can gain points and compete against friends or unknowns contains really good questions. I ran through a few and had to make guesses on some. Part science and part fun (Who is the lion in the Firestone Walker logo?) they are a bit addicting.

The checking in is a little slow and many beers are missing which is a bummer because if the beer isn’t there then two of the tabs become unusable. Even if you find your beer, I checked Allagash since it is a larger brewery whose beer I had recently, the app was not connected to the Maine brewery and so the brewmaster section is again grayed out and unclickable. I assume that more and more beers will be added (crowdsourcing this is really the way to go) and that more breweries will sign up to become players as part of their social media strategy.

As of now, I would like to beat questions from an L.A. based brewery and not Boulder Beer Co. whose beers we don’t get but who seems to be the biggest player in the brewmaster section of the app. This makes the app not up to speed yet. More beta and (hopefully) growing.

I think the idea of a “challenge the actual Brewmasters with their tasting skills by answering specific sensory questions for each beer” is great and the fact that actual prizes can be won is a distinguishing feature too.

Right now, I suggest playing the trivia and occasionally checking in to see how many local breweries you can play “against”.

Beer Stat App

In reviewing the craft beer apps on my iPad and checking around to see if there were any to talk about for my weekly Food GPS post, I saw one that piqued my interest. That was soon dashed by the fact that it is either dead or unavailable here.

It is called Beer Stat and instead of being one of the multitudes of apps that are either A) rating apps B) taplist apps or C) recommendation apps, this one helps you track your daily, weekly and monthly consumption statistics. And not just in calories but also in dollars.

I hope this app will become available because I think it would add an important check and balance aspect to our drinking habits.

The Beer Exchange

I am not a beer trader.  The arcane rules, the clique-ishness and beer snobs that seem to roam this land throw me off.  But, maybe a website dedicated to it will bring a more mainstream attitude to it.

Enter the Beer Exchange… “This is the first web application dedicated to craft beer trading.  Quickly find trade partners, easily manage your trades, and build your reputation.”

Untappd

What do you get if you cross FourSquare with beer?

You get Untappd.
Take a look…..

It allows you to check on what others are drinking (right now) as you input what you are drinking.

The only downside other than being pretty addictive to watch the beers scroll by is when an industrial water lager pops up. So sad that people would waste time and money on that and then proclaim it. It’s like tweeting that I aerosoled some Cheese Whiz into my mouth. (I would never, ever do that)
