SoCal to the World

My Facebook and Twitter feed was hijacked yesterday by loads of good news from the World Beer Cup which was a bonus add on to the Craft Brewers Conference in Philadelphia which already was making me social media jealous.

Beachwood picked up a prestigious Large Brewpub of the Year win and Noble Ale Works racked up an overall win in the Small Brewery category.  Overall California brought in 39 (if my counting is right this early in the morning) medals with Eagle Rock going gold for their Yearling sour, Beachwood and Noble should have had chairs on stage, TAPS pulled in multiple medals continuing their impressive string since the new brewing team took over, Tustin and Smog City with their shared past will share memories of winning too with a bronze and silver respectively.

You can check the full list HERE. But it is impressive considering this competition was open to the world.  But a microcosm of the current beer culture could be found in the Sour German category where  Oregon and California nabbed the one and two slots with a German brewery coming in third!

The Golden State brewers were warriors last night.  Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have nothing on the brewing splash that SoCal made in Philly.

Review – Unapologetic IPA

One of my favorite breweries, Beachwood has joined the growing list of Stone collaborators to create an Unapologetic IPA along with third partner, Heretic Brewing.

This IPA that was kindly provided to me by Stone pours a bright and cheerful orange. The first taste that comes through is Concord grape. Grape Ne-Hi to be exact. Then a heavy bitterness hangs like a shroud.

The aroma is great on this one. Zippy and filled with grape notes. But that promising start is undone by the heaviness. There is just an astringency that makes this below average. And then the cat pee notes kick in a little too harshly as well. And since these are such new hops.  Belma?  Yakima #’s without catchy names?  I don’t really know what is causing the high points or the low.

This just verifies that the Stone IPA palate is not mine. That is no knock on Stone. Their Hophead fans are legion, so they are playing to their customer base for sure. And I know they have a session IPA out there that is more in line with my delicate sensibilities but I would have liked to see less hops here. Toned down the ABV a skosh as well.

All apologies but this IPA is not for me.

Beachwood at 3 + many, many beers

All Beachwood All Day.

That could be a motto for pretty much any day of the week but once you gaze upon the massive list of beers there are celebrating with, you will see why this particular day is special.

Oh and they will be debuting a new beer….

“It wouldn’t be an anniversary party without an anniversary beer. On July 5th, Beachwood Brewing will release its newest bottled brew—Greenshift Double IPA—a gargantuan double India pale ale with a wide spectrum of hops. Citra, Amarillo, El Dorado, Nelson Sauvin, Galaxy, and Warrior varieties in the kettle create a planetary array of flavors and an infinite wavelength of aromas from the supernova-sized charged hops. Greenshift will be available in bottles and on draft at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing.”

Amalgamated hops

One of my favorite purveyors of bitter IPA’s, Beachwood Brewing has been releasing bottles of selected beers from their line-up and they go fast!  And probably none will go faster than Amalgamator.  One of my favorite IPA’s from Julian Shrago.

Oh and three other Beachwood notes:

1. SourFest is underway at both locations.  If you like tart, head there pronto

2. Drake’s Brewing Company and Beachwood Brewing have come together to brew a collaboration IPA,  Mind Melder IPA.  From the press release, “for his part, Julian offered up his thoughts on the most reasonable brewing methods for bringing the beer to their mutual standards on his system, and John brought in sexy hops, El Dorado and Nelson, to intensify the fresh lemon and tropical fruit aromas to their utmost potential.”

3. Another Beachwood favorite is in the bottling pipeline!

They are certainly busy, industrious folks at Beachwood.
