Review – Double IPA from Angel City

I thought I had missed out on the Double IPA release from Angel City but then, a package arrived at my door a little worse for wear with the new beer undamaged inside.

Double IPA is part of their special Limited 22oz bomber series. It is hopped up with a blend of Warrior, Galena, Citra, Centennial,Amarillo and Motueka hops. It is almost a British DIPA to me. There is a strong malt presence in this offering. The aroma exudes orange pekoe and spice. It is more “wet” than others. Not quite silky but certainly strong without over bounding the style parameters.

Of the Angel City beers, this lands higher on my list. It achieves what many DIPA’s don’t. Deliver a bitterness punch with a strong malt base.

Review – Sparkling Berliner Weisse from Angel City

There are times when a special beer is required. Christmas, my birthday and New Year’s Eve.

This year, thanks to the generosity of Angel City, I was gifted a bottle of their grape infused Sparkling Berliner Weisse.

Did it start my 2016 off well?

Yes, it did. The sparkler pours a hazy dark yellow. There is a solid taste of white grapes right from the start. This beer is bubbly but not in an aggressive way. It has a freshness and vibrancy to it. The end finishes dry but not puckeringly so. There is tartness in the mix but like the dryness it is a minor player. The grapes are in charge here and in a pleasing way.

Drinking Buddies at Angel City

Angel City Brewing and Jameson’s Irish Whiskey threw quite the shindig on Tuesday night. I’m still recovering from it. The theme of the event was Drinking Buddies and it was a beer release party mixed with whiskey and cocktails plus the back-story on the different blends that went into the final barrel-aged Imperial Irish Ale.

My drinking buddy Richard and I sampled the three beers that made up the blend of choice and though we may have liked different components of the beers. I personally thought the dryness and woody-ness of the sherry barrel version was the most intriguing, the Jameson’s came through loud and clear in the end.

Jon Carpenter, the brewmaster gave the rundown on the process and the flavors that each component added after we got a little whiskey lesson from the Jameson rep. It was kinda surreal to see a vey Irish Whiskey juxtaposed against the gritty graffiti and urban L.A. vibe of the brewery but this was a serious party. Plates and glasses whisked away quickly. Plenty of food and gelato and more than plenty of whiskey.

Jameson LA

Supply and demand. Barrels are at a premium in craft beer land. Each new brewery dreams of a barrel aging program, which means that getting your hands on one is like getting your hands on enough hops.

So landing a barrel or three from Jameson Irish Whiskey is a coup. And Angel City of DTLA came back from Ireland with barrels as part of the Jameson Drinking Buddies program.
Angel City Brewery in Los Angeles was one of five American breweries that also included Captain Lawrence Brewing Company in New York, Deep Ellum Brewing Company in Dallas, Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver, and Hilliard’s Beer in Seattle.

Each brewery got a ticket to the distillery in Ireland and was tasked with making a beer that reflected the barrel and their neighborhood where they brew.

Plus the whole thing was filmed and you can see what Angel City got involved with at JamesonNeighborhood.com. From there you can learn about the Angel City Imperial Irish Ale and the other four beers.

Obviously a tasting will be held at some point and you can either Social Media-ize the brewery to find out when it will happen.

Food and Beer go together like hand and glove and another time and place to test that theory is on July 26th,  when Angel City’s monthly Food Cluster Truck celebrates grilled cheese.  “Four trucks – Dogtown Dog, Slanging Corea, Canvas , and Midnight Mission’s culinary course – will take on the classic gooey goodness and make it their own for a chance to be a food truck favorite, earning bragging rights and a fabulous trophy. The event takes place on July 26 and runs 12-6pm. Voting boxes will be at each truck for patrons to submit their favorites, and voting will be counted at 6pm, with the winner announced at 6:30pm.”

#LABW5 Pick of the Night – Saturday 9/21

Screen shot 2013-09-07 at 8.04.35 AM

Each morning throught L.A. Beer Week, I will give you my Pick of the Night.  The ONE event I think rises to the top of the list.  Some days that choice will be harder and there might be 1A and 1B’s (if I get wishy-washy).  I will endeavor to pick events you can just head out to.  But if tickets are required, I will mention it.  But expect crowds.  Craft beer and craft beer in L.A. is popular.

For the first Saturday of L.A. Beer Week, head downtown and meet some beer bloggers (like me!) at Angel City……
