A Podcast & A Beer – Who Shat on the Floor At My Wedding

Yes, the title is long but it is apt. This is the hilarious investigation into a poo found on the floor of a wedding venue. Who Shat stars brides Karen Whitehouse and Helen McLaughlin and their ‘under-qualified ‘Detective’ Lauren Kilby as they puzzle out the mystery.

Now, I say hilarious for a few episodes before it becomes quite repetitive. And it grated upon me to the point that when I saw that the last two episodes were over an hour each, I tapped out. It seemed clear that the culprit was not going to be found or at least funnily left hanging.

But the waning interest fits in with the beer suggestion. Actually, less a suggestion and more a memory exercise. What beers have you had that started off really good but after a few sips lost that initial wow factor. I will start with an anonymous brewery where the aroma of the IPA was bright and soul stirring. A veritable melange of fruit notes, but the base of the beer was flimsy and watery and by the end was not finished to empty glass status.

A Podcast & A Beer – Vinfamous

Since this is a Paso Robles focused month to start with, you kinda have to talk about wine. And maybe crime too. Vinfamous is a podcast from Wine Enthusiast magazine.

They have piggybacked on the true crime podcast by finding stories of wine crime and it is well done even though I am not usually a fan of that genre of podcast. Plus there are only eight episodes so it id an easy binge for weekend.

My first beer choice is to highlight Smog City’s Grape Ape IPA which has had a recent label re-design but more importantly uses pomace from grapes in the recipe. If you are not in Los Angeles, go find a beer loaded with Nelson Sauvin hops to get that full grape experience.

In the Tap Lines for June 2023

June is a special month on the calendar. You have the Firestone Walker Invitational, you have L.A. Beer Week and the weather ain’t like a pizza oven yet here in Los Angeles. This month plenty of posts about the festivals and less about the weather.

A Podcast & A Beer – Doctor Dante

This month we get into hypnotism with Doctor Dante. And boy is this guy a huckster with a radio announcer voice of the ages.

Hosted by Sam Mullins with a mixture of awe and incredulity, Dr. Dante tells the tale of a man driven to be successful no matter what the cost. To go from being married to Lana Turner to an Arizona penitentiary is quite the roller coaster.

For the beer to drink with this podcast, what beer would you need to be hypnotized to drink? Me, overly sweet pastry stouts or too smoked Rauchbiers would be on my list. So pick a beer you would normally turn up your nose at, make a bad beer decision, heck, everyone in this podcast made bad choices.

In the Tap Lines for May 2023

It has been a colder than usual spring here in L.A., heck the whole West Coast. No joke but it snowed in Portland on April 1st. Let’s dive into a month of beer fun with shorts on.

A Podcast & A Beer – Ringer Food

I was reading the paltry food coverage in the Sacramento Bee thinking that there has got to be more and fun food news out there, and there is if you listen to Ringer Food.

Hosted by Juliet Litman and David Jacoby, you get a fast paced on the clock round up of news about food. What’s up with a theft of Cadbury Eggs, why did the guy bring ribs onto a flight? Taste tests and more.

Mostly it is fun banter between two people who enjoy food and sharing their viewpoints. You might even find out why some people call ketchup Tommy K.

For beer, no need to don your chef’s toque and apron, instead look for a fun beer. Maybe the label is fun like a Pizza Port IPA with the surf and sand on it, or a wild ale with some crazy ingredient in it. The goal being to keep craft beer fun. Whichever beer does that works.

A Podcast & A Beer – Let’s Make a Rom-Com

Last month, I listened to comedians trying to come up with a plausible Sci-Fi pilot.  Well, that same team has released (on Valentine’s Day of course), Let’s Make a Rom-Com.

Ryan Beil, Maddy Kelly, and Mark Chavez are appealing as hosts / romance writers and because they are both really trying to write a romantic comedy while simultaneously learning about why and how one clicks makes the podcast really work.

For beer, I would head to chocolate. Chocolate stouts. German chocolate pastry beer. Bottle Logic in Orange County has a plethora of beers like that. Or if you want to dig deeper, pick a past or current relationship and where you “met cute” and pick a beer from that city.
