SFBW2023

That is right! One week from now is the nine day celebration of beer in San Francisco and surrounding areas that is San Francisco Beer Week.

One place to start (Their calendar is really big) are the chapter events….

▪ East Bay brewers and beer enthusiasts reunite at 21st Amendment Brewery in San Leandro, Friday evening, Feb. 10. 

    ▪    The North Bay beer community gathers at Pond Farm Brewing Co. in San Rafael, Friday evening, Feb. 10. 

    ▪    On Saturday, San Francisco beer enthusiasts celebrate atop Salesforce Park, hosted by Barebottle Brewing, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 11, rain or shine. 

    ▪    Breweries and fans along the Coast convene at Other Brother Beer Co. in Seaside, Saturday evening, Feb. 11.

    ▪    Silicon Valley launches the week at The Guildhouse, in San Jose, Saturday evening, Feb. 11.

The Best Beers of January 2023

January proved to be weird beer month. My two co-winners this month were made to resemble tea and ice cream.

But before I jump too far ahead, honorable mentions for the month are the Simcoe IPA from El Segundo Brewing that stole thunder from their Meltdown behemoths. I also quite liked my first beer from Une Annee, their Tripel, with a sparsely decorated label was right on the mark.

Back to the weird. Cuppa a British Dark Mild with lovely notes of Earl Grey tea was way down the ABV scale, in the 3% range, but it was filled with malt and tea flavors. Near the end of the month, I was pleasantly surprised by a cream ale from La Bodega Brewing in Whittier, with added lactose so they could call it Whittier Ice Cream Ale. Again, not a big beer but well done.

The 2023 BSP Disclaimer

Each and every year, I start the blogging calendar with a disclaimer. As a beer blogger, I feel it is important to be clear about my rules and morals.

Every beer, brewery, event, restaurant reviewed on this site whether paid for or complimentary will get the same treatment when reviewed. If I don’t like the beer, it will be described as a beer that I did not like, even if it was handed to me by the brewer and I like the brewer.

If I forget, (which probably will happen, because it has before) to mention how I got a beer or a pass to an event, then go back and read the previous paragraph.

I clearly want the Los Angeles local beer scene to continue to flourish and I want craft beer in general to do so as well. So, my reviews will also take that into consideration. Some points in 2023 will require cheerleading and others require harsh sentences. I am not subtle in any way, so I am sure you will figure it out quickly.

I will be as impartial and truthful as I can be while also staying as opinionated as usual.
