Wyoming Brewery # 3 – Black Tooth Brewing

Our final stop on the Wyoming Ale Trail is in Sheridan at Black Tooth Brewing.

The brewery began in November of 2010 with a 10 BBL brew house. Co-owner Travis Zeilstra is also the brewer and graduate of the Western Culinary Institute. He was awarded “brewer of the year” award at GABF in 2007.

Here is what I would put in my initial taster tray:

Bomber Mountain Amber
“An Irish-style red ale with a complex malt profile of biscuits, caramel and cotton candy. A well rounded and balanced amber with a dry, crisp, finish.”

Hot Streak IPA
“An American Style India Pale Ale, copper in color and accentuated with American Hops. This beer imparts both pine and citrus flavors, while maintaining an ever present floral aroma.”

Cowboy Joe
“This is a robust style porter characterized by a malty dark ale with a complex caramel, toffee, bitter chocolate and flavorful roasty character. We infused this porter with a variety of coffee from City Brew. The coffee infusion gives this porter a distinctive yet complimentary coffee aroma and flavor.”

Sheridan Pilsner
“A German style Pilsner brewed with a classic German Pilsner lager yeast. Pilsners are straw colored lagers with noble hoppy bite that gives a light crisp finish.”

Featured Review – Two Beers from Roadhouse Brewery – Part 3

We enter the hoppy realm of Roadhouse with their Wilson IPA and their Volume 1 Hazy beer, Mountain Jam.

Mountain Jam Volume 1
This is pineapple all the way through. The aroma is like opening a can of pineapple chunks and the flavor follows through. There is a spritzy bitter hit that livens up the proceedings and ably tamps down the perceived sweetness. Certainly looks the hazy part.

Wilson
A little orange citrus. Mostly dank heaviness here. Wet and sticky on the tongue. Little bit of pine needle aroma. Nice lively carbonation. Like the lizard on the label. Good balance but doesn’t have the wow of the hazy.

Wyoming Brewery # 2 – Danielmark’s Brewing

https://www.danielmarksbrewing.com/beers

For the second stop in Wyoming we head to Cheyenne and Danielmark’s Brewing. The backstory is another homebrewer to pro scenario which shows, once again, how important home brewing is to swelling the ranks of breweries in all states across the country.

Now let’s get introduced to what I would pick for my initial taster tray if I found myself in the Cowboy state….

“Hello, I am indeed the CORSON. I was forced to briefly describe myself so here it is. I guess I’m a Pilsner, but that’s just because I hear people say I am. My makers always mad at me, I think it’s because I’m the odd one of the bunch and I take forever to make.Oh, well, I don’t like him either.”

“So my name is Bluesitra, I love Citra® hops. My maker tells me I am the best seller, which makes me the coolest beer here. I have Belgian roots and I love long stumbling walks on the beach. Did I say that I love Citra® hops?”

“Most people call me Old Regret, I’m named after a horse from one of my makers favorite movies. My friends call me Red, not sure why. I’m special because I overheard my maker tell someone I am his favorite. This is also why the others don’t like me.”

Featured Review – Two Beers from Roadhouse Brewery – Part 2 The Belgian

Round 2 of Roadhouse month brings us to a pair of high ABV Belgian beers….

Avarice & Greed
Strong golden. Nice lasting foamy Head. Like a hefe but imperial. Lots of clove notes. Well balanced for the most part. Bit of alcohol burn at the end of each sip. The three word descriptor on the label is spot on. Warm, dry and estery.

Siren Song
Though it is a whopping 5% higher than AG, it tastes milder. Getting fruitcakey flavors. Citrus, raisins. Little bit of menthol aroma. The yeast esters come through here but more wet and herbal. Spice, maybe rye notes as well.

Great to see these two beers in smaller bottle formats. That is so much more manageable. My winner would be the Siren Song. The lack of alcohol burn really sets it apart.

Featured Review – Two Beers from Roadhouse Brewery – Part 1 The Light

This month, I will be featuring reviews from the Wyoming brewery, Roadhouse. We starting with the two lightest options….

Family Vacation
Called a crushable ale. Pours a vivid lemony color. Super light. Bready with minerality. Can label is a bit much. There’s a little beer story, an image of a growling bear, a style/ pairs with and notes, the independent seal plus a red band across the bottom. This is a simple and nice beer. Family Vacation is a great name for it. Malt sticks to the roof of the mouth.

Trout Whistle
Pours a nice orange color with good head and lacing. Smell seems a bit off. Butter and pine. First sip is fine though. Some tangerine notes. A little creamy. Nice subdued level of bitterness

GABF Gold & Unknown Brewery # 1 – Melvin Brewing

Screen Shot 2015-10-03 at 11.45.49 AM

We start in Wyoming with a brewery that had roots in a much lauded restaurant and brewery, Thai Me Up.  Melvin Brewing is now moving from a 3bbl to a 30bbl system.  And that may boot them out of the category that they won this year, Small Brewpub of 2015.

They won gold for Chchchch-Cherry Bomb in the American Fruit Beer category and a bronze in the Fresh/Wet Hop Ale for their namesake IPA.

Let’s check out some other beers to try:

Killer Bees – “Clean, smooth, slow motion, easy drinkin’, honey. The palette cleanser extraordinaire. Perfect for mowing your unwatered lawn, sipping in the shower, or fishing on a Sunday. ”

Hubert MPA – “Some would just call him an IPA, but we call him an MPA. The Melvin Pale Ale. A welcomed hand shake to your taste buds.”

Clinic ISA – “This medicinal India Session Ale is perfect for drinking at work under your desk, on a deck under the sun in your skivvies, or chilling out on a chairlift. Let Melvin Clinic make it all better with this light, crisp, and fresh taste. ”

..or try their Trip Out Tripel.

Holiday Beer # 15 – Snow King Pale Ale from Snake River

Snake River SnowKing

Snake River Snow King / Wyoming

Snow King Mountain is Wyoming’s first ski area founded 75 years ago by Neil Rafferty. Generations of Jackson Hole skiers have cut their teeth on the King. Home to the Jackson Hole Ski Club, Snow King is one of the steepest little hills around. Snow King Pale Ale is a copper colored English American hybrid. On tap in the pub, around town and in a commemorative can, this special pale ale will only run through the winter.”

50 from 50 – Wyoming

It was a dark and stormy night… actually it has been cool by LA standards but this is still a sun city and when I find flavorful session beers of any style, I am happy. And I found one in the organic OB-1 from Snake River Brewery. Now I am 74% of the way to my goal with 3 1/2 months left!
