The Beer Search Party reviews We Love LA beers – Part 6

There has been such a fantastic outpouring of support for Los Angeles by breweries far and wide in the wake of the devastating wildfires of this past January.

The charity program spearheaded by Common Space Brewery has garnered quite a bit of support from California and the rest of the Fractured States of America.

Here are my thoughts on the latest beers that I have had in the worldwide series…

Crowns & Hops with Malibu Brewing – this is my second C&H beer from this charity series and it has a little more sadness attached since the other brewery is Malibu Brewing who are so near the destruction.  It is a West Coast IPA that pours a really light orange color with hints of yellow.  The aroma is quite an astringent lemon and the flavor follows to an extent before going into pine territory.  Very punchy and not for the fearful of hops.

There Does Not Exist – love the little E character from the brewery name logo moved to the We in We Love L.A..  There is a bit of a sweet tart candy aroma in this lager from SLO.  That shows in the flavor as well before the malt notes sneak in all quiet like.  This has more of a pilsner snap to it.  Overall, I do like it.

Here are my thoughts on the latest beers that I have had…

Campsite Passion Fruit Pale Ale – has a definite haze to it and the passion fruit tartness delivers too.  seems less a pale ale but a heartier base than a wheat ale, somewhere between.  closer to a sour to me.

Tripping Animals West Coast IPA – a Florida entrant to the cause using Strata, Amarillo and Motueka hops.  pours a darker shade of orange.  something off here.  smells and tastes like a musty English pub ale and not in a good way. Bad batch or bad transport from the east coast.

Creature Comforts Pale Ale – pours a light orange color, nice heady aroma to it. It is a collaboration with Crowns & Hops. Nice sticky pine residue here. Could be confused for an IPA. Has a good sparkle to it as well.

Here are my thoughts on the latest beers that I have had, both from outside California…

pFriem Family Brewers went the IPA route but theirs is a super light yellow color. It is nice and crisp with notes of orange floating into and out of focus on the palate.

Hop Butcher for the World did up a Citra and Mosaic West Coast Pilsner which pours more orange on top and yellower at the foot of the glass.  There is a hint of pilsner here but this tastes stronger and danker than even a pale ale.

Here are my thoughts on the latest beers that I have had, let’s get going….

Far Field pale ale nice sharp bite. Grapefruit. Strong. Little buttery though at the back end.

Smog City a West Coast IPA that has a hazy mouthfeel to it.  A combo of bitter and vanilla.  Some pine on the back end too.

Lawless light orange in color. Piney bitterness followed by a hint of grape.

Radiant Beer Co. is a just fine IPA. Medium dose of bitterness but also a touch buttery

Stone Brewing – Pasadena has a proper orange juice looking hazy. Very lemony mixed with tangerine too. Hops scrape the tongue.

Long Beach Beer Lab is a combo of dank meets citrus. Nice strong hit of bitterness. Flavors mute as it warms though.

Frogtown pours a darker amber color. Getting lime and malt. Earthy hop note. Almost a British IPA.

Common Space the organizer of this endeavor went the hoppy lager route. More on the lager side than the hoppy. Little orange mixing with the malt.

SoCal Cerveceros Love LA

Famed and awarded home brew club, the SoCal Cerveceros are pitching in for the We Love L.A. wildfire relief with a four-pack survey of styles.  It will probably be limited in supply so follow along the socials to make sure you can snag one.  The Irish Red is a nice choice as is the Saison.

Heart

I have not written about the terrible fires that popped up seemingly everywhere earlier this month in the Los Angeles area. Mostly because it is so sad and disheartening to see such catastrophe some of it closer to where I reside in Glendale than wildfire has ever been.

And Los Angeles was already barely able to build enough as it was, especially when it comes to affordable housing for all economic levels. Now rents and home prices will push even higher than they already were.

But this is not a housing blog, though it kind of is, because the more people that can find housing at a price point that isn’t 75% of take-home pay, the more people will go out and buy good craft beer.

Anyway, the preceding paragraphs are prelude to the actual point of the fact that Common Space Brewery has stepped up to rally our remaining L.A. breweries into a special beer to help the rebuild cause, We Love LA will be showing soon up from over 50 California breweries participating and close to 10 from out of state as well, and I will be grabbing from wherever in financial support. I strongly suggest that we make this beer a complete sell-out.
