Some may not like Untappd or Beer Advocate ratings for the tickers or sometimes weird reviews but if you use the services just to measure yourself you might learn a bit. In a nod at transparency and/or education, here is my ratings charted by Untappd…

Why, for example are their three towers on my chart right smack dab in the middle?  And why is everything bunched up around 2 and up?

I would say that the majority of beers are in the middle of my taste spectrum and that I am pretty damn picky.  So there are no drain pours but very little at the far right either.  Is this the sign of an intelligent drinker?  I would like to think so.  But statistics are known to lie.  But I encourage all beer searchers to look at how they rate the beers they drink.

Most Checked In of 2018

Granted this isn’t a perfect vote counting system but at least the Republicans hasn’t attempted to disenfranchise Hazy beer lovers so the plain total of check-ins on the Untappd app does have some good stats to follow and keep tabs on.

Trillium at # 9 is a bit of a shocker considering that it is primarily East Coast and traders that have access. Same for Tree House but more so at # 4.  I am a promiscuous drinker but I have had nothing (0) from either so the casual beer fan outside of New England probably hasn’t either.  Maybe checking-in is skewed East Coast?

Otherwise the only supposition that I have is that Sam Adams will probably rise a bit with the Red Sox World Series beer but that may be dampened by the Trump ties that Koch has.

from the Untappd Podcast – Part 2

Part two of the Untappd podcast news comes from Carlsberg with some new packaging, the Snap Pack.

Instead of using plastic rings, or the bio-degradable rings or the plastic snap-on lids, the Danish mega-brewery is using dots, with glue that will bind the cans together enough to be moved about but still easy enough to pull apart.

It is in only the UK market to start but maybe this is something that can catch on here, if the price is right.

Pew! Pew!

The Most

Untappd, the beer check-in app has been releasing some interesting statistics and the most recent that I have seen is the most of interest to me.

Here are the Top 10 Most Checked-In Breweries of 2017…

All but one are U.S. breweries and even BrewDog, though counted as Scotland, has an Ohio presence. They are all larger distribution footprint breweries minus one, Trillium which is probably on the list due to their hazyness but they are the only hazy IPA famous on the list which tells you something.

I was surprised to see Founders at the top. I would have pegged Sam Adams or Sierra Nevada for that slot. But other than that, I don’t see any other odd data.

Then the 10 individual Most Checked-In Beers…

I will toot my own horn and say that I have had all but Yuengling in my drinking career. And, if memory serves, 4 of these beers in the last year. Yeah, the list is IPA heavy but I would say that Two Hearted and 60 Minute are probably on the IPA border. I am a bit surprised at the double marks for New Belgium and Founders. Both are within 4+ check-ins of each other all told.

I do look forward to seeing more of these lists because it is a good indicator of the sales end of the business.

Today is International Stout Day

bdg_stoutday2016_lg
Whether you like collecting badges on Untappd or you just need an excuse to drink something other than an IPA, International Stout Day (aka TODAY) is here to help. And, of course celebrate the classic beer style, Stout.

Learn more about Stout Day and then head to a craft beer shoppe and try one.

Untappd Tapping Data

untappd
Pulling people to your website, be it a beer website or blog is much harder than pushing information to a set list of people. With the added benefit of having said names and information to possibly sell to others who might covet it.

The user base of Untappd is a niche group that might act on pushed information and that’s probably the reasoning behind the fact that they announced the launch of Untappd for Business. “Verified venues” that sign up and fork over the cash will have the ability to share tap lists plus event info to the 3 million users of the app.

Users (like me) can “friend” one of these venues to get the tap list and event info plus receive notifications when your favorited beers are tapped at one of your “friends” within a 15-mile radius of their location.

Expect more updates and additions to Untappd now that the founders are part of Next Glass and have more time to devote to the app.

Untappd to Next Glass

Mergers aren’t constrained to just breweries. My go-to app Untappd has recently merged into Next Glass. Another app company. One that I did not favorably rate.

I am happy because this allows the two Untappd founders to become fully employed in beer instead of part-time which should lead to improvements in Untappd. On the other hand, who knows if it will eventually get folded into Next Glass which I found to have ambitions that were too great for a world of craft beer that is constantly updating. The feature of bottle/can recognition is hopefully improved at this point though in reading some reviews it does seem that the main problem that I had, lack of beers in the database is still prevalent.

Maybe combined they can create a super-beer-app?

before L.A. Beer Week starts

As if L.A. Beer Week needed to be any more fun, here are 3 more ale-ventures to accomplish between the 20th and 30th this month.

From the fine folks behindL.A. Beer Week:

1. CAPS FOR CAPS INITIATIVE
We’ve got some awesome local breweries with some beautiful looking bottle caps emblazoned with their logos. Homies like Eagle Rock Brewery, Hangar 24 Craft Brewery, The Bruery, Black Market Brewing, and Brouwerij West. If you can collect a dozen of those bottle caps, you can trade em in for an official LABW hat at the LA Beer Week Festival. (Hat = cap. Bottle cap. Caps for Caps… see what we did there?)

And for those local breweries who aren’t yet marking their bottle caps with their logo, we’ve partnered with local bottle shops/LABW sponsors to place special stickers on those caps to help spread the love and make this little program even more of a happy success. Look for the stickers at these fine potent potable purveyors:

Wally’s Wine and Spirits (West LA)
K&L Wine Merchants (Hollywood)
The Oaks Gourmet Market (Los Feliz)
Red Carpet Wine (Glendale)
Co-Opportunity (Santa Monica)

If for some unknown reason you aren’t attending the LA Beer Week Festival, you can bring said 12 caps to Eagle Rock Brewery or Beer Belly to claim your superfly sombrero.

2. THE LA BEER WEEK BUCKET LIST
As an added incentive to head out to multiple events this year (as if the events themselves weren’t incentive enough), we’ve devised the brilliant LA Beer Week Bucket List to help steer you in a few adventurous directions. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to collect special stickers by participating in certain types of events: visiting local breweries, attending a beer education seminar, moseying out to one of our highlighted shindigs, and seeking out an extra special, rare beer. Those who complete this most noble quest, collecting all four stickers and bringing their finished Bucket List to the LA Beer Week Festival are then entitled to a bottle of the official LABW beer, Unity, from Eagle Rock Brewery! It also gets you into a drawing for free tickets to the amazing BAM Fest (Beer, Art, and Music) on Oct. 6th in Santa Monica!

3. LA BEER WEEK BADGE ON UNTAPPD
The true craft beer cognoscenti are using Untappd to check-in to their favorite beers, a newfangled 21st century kind of way to drink socially, if you will. Users of the free app can receive the official Untappd LA Beer Week badge simply by checking into any beer between Sept. 20-30, with their location geotagged anywhere within Los Angeles or Orange County. Not using Untappd yet? Well, what are you waiting for?! Head to untappd.com on your smartphone to get started.
