The Beer Search Party reviews We Love LA beers – Part 6

There has been such a fantastic outpouring of support for Los Angeles by breweries far and wide in the wake of the devastating wildfires of this past January.

The charity program spearheaded by Common Space Brewery has garnered quite a bit of support from California and the rest of the Fractured States of America.

Here are my thoughts on the latest beers that I have had in the worldwide series…

Crowns & Hops with Malibu Brewing – this is my second C&H beer from this charity series and it has a little more sadness attached since the other brewery is Malibu Brewing who are so near the destruction.  It is a West Coast IPA that pours a really light orange color with hints of yellow.  The aroma is quite an astringent lemon and the flavor follows to an extent before going into pine territory.  Very punchy and not for the fearful of hops.

There Does Not Exist – love the little E character from the brewery name logo moved to the We in We Love L.A..  There is a bit of a sweet tart candy aroma in this lager from SLO.  That shows in the flavor as well before the malt notes sneak in all quiet like.  This has more of a pilsner snap to it.  Overall, I do like it.

Here are my thoughts on the latest beers that I have had…

Campsite Passion Fruit Pale Ale – has a definite haze to it and the passion fruit tartness delivers too.  seems less a pale ale but a heartier base than a wheat ale, somewhere between.  closer to a sour to me.

Tripping Animals West Coast IPA – a Florida entrant to the cause using Strata, Amarillo and Motueka hops.  pours a darker shade of orange.  something off here.  smells and tastes like a musty English pub ale and not in a good way. Bad batch or bad transport from the east coast.

Creature Comforts Pale Ale – pours a light orange color, nice heady aroma to it. It is a collaboration with Crowns & Hops. Nice sticky pine residue here. Could be confused for an IPA. Has a good sparkle to it as well.

Riip’d

No signs of craft collaborations quiet quitting anytime soon and here is another one to look for, that I particularly like the label for because it combines both breweries trademark look….

As for the beer itself, Riip’d Into Existence has your Mosaic T90 and Cryo, Strata CGX, Columbus Cryo, and El Dorado so should be just a touch hoppy.

Central Coast Okto Showdown

Today we compare / contrast two Central Coast Oktoberfest beers.

Firestone Walker Oaktoberfest, an oak aged lager, pours a pretty orange hue.  You can smell the malts from arms distance away. Crisp with malt taking center stage. Simple and straightforward.  A slight metallic note at the back but this is a lovely fall beer.

There Does Not Exist Oktoberfest Lager is another orange gem but this version is say more silky and missing some of the crispness.  I get an Navel orange citrus note as well that mingles with the malt notes.

Winner – This is a tough call. I would like to merge the crispness of the Oaktoberfest with the TDNE complexity.  But if asked which I would get seconds of, it would be the Firestone Walker.

Review – Psychic Advisor DIPA from There Does Not Exist

Straight from San Luis Obispo is There Does Not Exist. Here is my take on my first beer from the brewery, Psychic Advisor Double IPA.

This is an old school West Coast Citra bomb. Pours a clear dark yellow with an herbal citrus aroma. Quite the intricate label art, all swirling lines with maybe an Ent like creature. The lemon really shines through. This is a strong beer but as opposed to DIPAs that pop you upside the head, this just is.
