Review – Oktoberfest Biers from Common Space

I don’t normally review draft beers because the vibes of a taproom may influence me but since it is Festbier season, I am making an exception for Common Space who had their Oktoberfest beers on draft, such as…

Now the bottom two beers are year rounders but that left five seasonals to partake of. So I started with the Passive Perception Dunekl which was a dark amber color and had mini espresso head. It was thin and sweet with a fruitcake cherry note to it. On a cooler fall day it might have been too slight but in humid SoCal it was fine.

The Rauch, Smoke on the Lager (which many a brewery has used as a beer name) had a nice medium hit of smoke. Almost a Carolina BBQ. That smoke faded though and despite not being a being a big rauch fan, was hoping for more.

Sean Suggests for September 2022

Hopefully, by now, you have partaken of a few Oktoberfest styled beers.  For those here in Los Angeles, I have two more suggestions for your boot steins plus a further afield beer that has BBQ involvement. 

Societe Brewing – Oktoberfest Lager – 4.6% – “Inspired by the famed light brews of Munich, this festive lager is crisp and clean with floral and mineral notes, plus a touch of lemony citrus zest.”

Far Field – Oh! So Smoky Smoked Porter – 5.3% – “Smoked Malt + Chocolate + Coffee and malts smoked by Osos BBQ.

Paperback Brewing – Doctor Octobock – German Fest Bock Lager – 6% – “pale, malty lager beer designed to distinguish between blandness and too much color.  The hop character is balanced with toasty malts and spicy notes from the hops.”

Athletic Brewing Company is entering the festbier ring with “America’s first non-alcoholic Oktoberfest brew. In honor of the traditional Oktoberfest beers, this Festbier is brewed with German Vienna and Munich malts, and German Hersbrucker hops.”

And they sent out their intro to the beer email in September like normal non PSL in July people!
