Carillon Historical Park

Dayton Ohio is getting both a historical and a functional brewery. I read about it in the March edition of All About Beer and here is what the Dayton Daily News has to say, “When the Carillon Brewing Co. opens in Dec. 2013, Carillon Historical Park will become the only museum in the nation producing and selling beer and wine using historic tools and techniques that date back to 1850, according to museum officials.” (You can read the full article HERE)

You will be able to watch how beer was made in the 19th century and the beauty part is that you can taste the old versions against current commercial beers and either see a difference or not. And I am sure it will give a great comparison to the current brewery tours as well. I am sure the smell alone will be drastically different.

Sounds like a fun museum to visit.

XMAS BEER – Frosted Frog

As part of the 50 States challenge, I knocked Ohio off the list with B.O.R.I.S the Crusher. We return to Hoppin’ Frog for today’s seasonal ale, the Frosted Frog.

Here is what the label trumpets: “The essence of Christmas is captured in this very bottle you are holding. Perfectly blended spices compliment Frosted Frog’s rich malt flavors, creating the ultimate Christmas experience. Celebrate the holidays as you savor this very special seasonal offering.”

I am a fan of the spiced winter warmers.

Rockmill Brewery

I would love to take a year and just visit brewery grand openings. Maybe somebody out there will pay me to do that.

In the meantime, how about organic and Ohio in the form of the recently opened Rockmill Brewery.

Along with a cool logo the brewers at Rockmill will be creating a witbier, saison, dubbel and tripel. Enjoy Ohio!

Shandy – American Style

HFrog-TurboShandyLabel-2

Not a big fan of the frog on the label, but I thoroughly enjoyed the B.O.R.I.S. that I had from this great Ohio brewery. Now this summer news via their Facebook page, “We are preparing for the release of our Turbo Shandy Citrus Ale around mid June. Alcohol 7% by volume. – Born from European tradition, our Shandy is a refreshing combination of lemon and light malt flavors. Unlike traditional shandys, Turbo Shandy, revs it up a couple of notches with a high test, full flavored approach as only Hoppin’ Frog can do.”

With the addition of another shandy from Leinenkugel, you can have a mini shandy fest!

I know fruit ales get a bad rap but when done right it brings a whole new flavor palette to the game.
