A Book & A Beer – Safe by Ryan Gattis

This month I tackled my second L.A. crime novel. Following Split Second, I read Safe from Ryan Gattis. Both travel extensively around the Southland with the hardboiled criminals and cops.

I preferred Safe due to the more downbeat ending. Plus I liked the dual format where Ghost (are titular hero) and Glasses (the adversary) alternate chapters. It makes for a consistent story with more information being provided than you get in a normal mystery or crime thriller. And not to spoil things, but Safe also was the more downbeat and I like that noir thing paired with the City of Angels.

When you have the book in your hands, I suggest grabbing beers at Mumford in the Skidrokyo section of DTLA with the Speakers and Sneakers IPA or the In Other News Belgian Single. Then to pay homage to the end of the book, head to San Pedro and Brouwerij West for Switcheroo Pale Ale or the even more L.A. appropriate Ask the Dust IPA. A nod to Fante.

3 Buses – 5 Years

Recently I spotted a L.A. Beer Hop bus on the highway and I started wondering who the lucky people inside the bus were and where they were headed next.

Tomorrow night, August 3rd starting at 6pm Cindy and Hal will celebrate 5 years of driving buses around Los Angeles at Mumford Brewing.

Drink beer their L.A. Beer Hop x Mumford Brewing collaborative Helles Lager that the LA Beer Hop team brewed with Peter Mumford.

In addition to the new beer, Vagabond Cheese will have a small cheese stand and pizzas will be available for delivery from Baldoria.

Solarc Beer Co. is now not just a gypsy brewer, now they have a hyphenated name due to a new fermenter installed at Mumford Brewing in DTLA. Plus at least one Solarc beer will be available on tap at the Mumford tasting room at all times.

So now Solarc is a Gypsy+Pop-Up. This will be the first of (hopefully) many small steps towards their own space in the future.

Excitingly, per their press release, “Every time a new beer is ready, a bottle release party will be held at Mumford so fans can come get the freshest Solarc from the brewers hands at a low price until bottles run out. Often times these release parties with be paired with a short musical performance or Solarc-appropriate art happening.”

Look for their new beer Wine Trash first.

Solarc Pop-Up inside of Mumford Brewing’s tap room is open Wednesday-Friday from 4pm-9pm, Saturday 12am-9pm, and Sunday 12am-7pm.

#LABW8 – DTLA United

Last night was the night for Downtown LA beer to shine. L.A. Beer Hop was shuttling from Boomtown in the North East to Iron Triangle in the South and each brewery in between.
DTLA United
I did not stop at each and everyone but I did get a few pints and here is the report from the LABW8 evening….
lady roja
Thank God for ½ pours and tasters. A long night stretched ahead starting at Boomtown where Dry River was the guest and where I started my beer ordering with their Cigana Brett IPA. It had a strong does of bitterness which was cut by heavy horse blanket notes. This was old school Brett. Then I moved on to the the other beer on offer, Lady Roja. The first of two red/pink beers that I would have on the evening. It had a lot of pie spice notes and heavy hibiscus but neither was too overbearing.

Then it was over to the Boomtown side of the room to try their Aliso – Belgian Strong Dark. This beer was right on point for me. Nice hit of Candi sugar, bit of bitterness, and it had good strength to it. Probably my favorite of the night. Then it was on the bus to….
dtla hop
Iron Triangle where I picked up a pair of new hoppy samplers starting with the Sluice Gate IPA. Nice. Probably a notch above the vast swath of IPA’s that are just fine. It had good body and aroma and I paired it with the Jawbone Black IPA. Which to me was not so hoppy. More on the dark malt side of the equation. There was a lurking grapefruit flavor in the back but that didn’t match well with the malt to me. I also had a few sips of the Socially Awkward Berliner. There is an initial burst but then the tart fades too quickly. Left with wheat notes.

Then the next stop was….
strawgose
…Angel City to try the premier of their Strawberry Gose. First off, strawberries are hard to add to beer. This is probably one of the better attempts at utilizing the berry. Now is it a gose? No. But there was a huge aroma and it was very tart and very cloudy pink. It worked for me.

Overall, this was a great way to get people to enjoy the beers at the breweries. There was a couple of things to add for next year. The buses stopped at 10pm and Mumford closed up shop around that time. Each of the LA Beer Hop buses should have had that fact displayed to help people plan. My group was left without a bus at Iron Triangle and had to get back to the center of action via alternate methods. Had we known the closing times, we could have planned our time more effectively. My second thought was that information about the breweries in DTLA could have been on the bus to pass out to. If the goal of the night is to get people to try new breweries, then a little bit of info might be a good sales pitch.

I just wish there had been more time to sneak in one more brewery before the clock struck last call.

Mumford is 1

For once the weather in SoCal was helpful to beer drinkers. A nice, cold layer of June Gloom settled in on the weekend of Mumford Brewing Co.’s 1st Anniversary party. Good because the 1st Anniversary beer was a Russian Imperial Stout by the name of Great Uncle George. In three different versions, no less. You could taste the Barrel-Aged version, the Irish version and the George Brett version (for you KC Royals fans).

Of the three, the Irish version seemed the most fully realized. The Barrel-Aged was fine but I would have liked to have seen it sit in the barrels longer. Seemed unready to me, as did the Brett version which tilted more RIS and much less farmhouse funky. My winner for the day was another politically inspired IPA, this time “Make Hops Great Again.” the latest IPA in their stable which would pair well with the Unpresidential NE Style IPA.

It has been great to see the growth of the brewery from first visit until now. They are becoming a great place to get a crowler of an IPA and also find a rotating set of beers. It will be fun to chart their progress in year 2!

News & Notes – DTLA Version

Despite Monday being a beer off-day for me, I headed down to Angel City to hear what some of the DTLA breweries had to say about the area and the growth of LA beer as well as their fledgling DTLA Brewers United group.

I took notes and when I got home, a trend emerged. They were mostly about Mumford Brewing. Not a smack at all against the others on the panel but what was piquing my interest were three things from the Skidrokyo brewery…

1. Cloudy IPA is coming this weekend. Will our West-Coast San Diego culture join this trend?
2. Mumford is looking into canning and getting some core beers onto shelves
3. June 12th is the date for the 1st Mumford anniversary. They will have a Russian Imperial Stout in three different variants.

Other tidbits, Indie Brewing is looking at end of year for their tap room to be open. Arts District Brewing is looking at creating a “Study Room” for the more beer obsessed and geeky. Plus this fall, their just might be a DTLA only brewfest.

Re-Review: Mumford Brewing

IMG_5424
Since my initial visit to Mumford in DTLA, I have been back two more times and it is time to update my views on the beers and the brewery. The big plus now is that they have a crowler fill station up and running. For $10-$12 bucks you can take home a fresh can of beer. That is great.

What also is heartening is that the beers are gradually improving. In my first taster tray, I really only enjoyed the LA Crema. The rest, including a strange rauch-hop IPA were underwhelming. Now hop heads have their choice of multiple IPA’s and a double IPA. I found Rambis IPA to be to my liking as was the DIPA, Looters. The Hop Rations IPA had a brilliant tropical fruit forward start but then faded into a strange bitterness that coated the tongue. It was truly a Jekyll and Hyde beer. The new dubbel tasted more like a German hefe crossed with a pretzel. It was fine if a bit watery but certainly not up to dubbel strength. The Scottish Stout, Groundskeepers was just fine. Nice dark color and easy drinking malt base.

The beer is improving to match the surrounding and on Sunday, you can park in the lot next door for free.

The beer variety is fine though I don’t quite taste a house character or a theme to their offerings that would mark them as unique but that may come in time.
