Mikkeller Down

I wasn’t expecting this news. Not with the Lakers-Clippers-Kings keeping Staples Center busy and considering that the brand is opening in Portland. They had a nice city chain working up the coast and now it is broken.

I don’t know if the space was too big or the coffee shop / bottle shop was not pulling people in but the few times that I went, there were crowds. It wasn’t the typical uncrowded restaurant that you can tell is not going to last.

This all being said without knowledge of the franchise style that operates the San Francisco and formerly L.A. locations. It is a loss that combined with Mega Bodega leaving last year in the same area that does not bode well for craft beer.

Maybe they can find a new location, plenty of mixed use space in the condos of Glendale.

Coffee and Cans

The coffee shop attached to the Mikkeller DTLA outpost, Kaffebaren, is now Kaffebaren & Bottle Shop.

The café that now will offer bottles and cans to drink there or to go.  Obviously this will be lead by offerings from our closest Mikkeller brewery, Mikkeller San Diego but the initial press release touts Bottle Logic and Three Weavers as well.  All told around 50 bottle options and 20 canned options which seems the inverse of most bottle shops in our canned beer world.

Danish/Mexican

Mikkeller DTLA is bringing back their Mexican Craft Beer Fest on the weekend of July 27th through July 28th. 20 Mexican craft beers will be on draft from the following breweries:

Border Psycho Brewery – Tijuana
Cerveceria AguaMala – Ensenada
Cerveceria Wendlandt – Ensenada
Fortuna – Guadalajara

South of the DTLA Border

If the World Cup has you rooting for El Tri, you can take it a step further and El Try some fine Mexican beers on tap at Mikkeller downtown. The prices are a bit on the high side but considering the quality and rare beers that will surely be on tap, it will be worth it.

#LABW10 – Week+ Recap Part 2

It just so happened that the Beer Belly – Koreatown One Night Stand landed in LABW and so ONS had a local bent with Mumford as the headliner with taps from Homage Brewing and State Brewing as well. This was originally billed as Mumford and East Coast Brewers like Interboro. The winning beer of the night in my (hop)inion was a Watermelon Agua Fresca lager from State that balanced the fruit and the malt very well. The two hazy options that I also tasted were fine. But didn’t pop for me.

I quickly popped down to the nearby Southland Beer to try the Unity IPA on cask. On cask, the hop notes are softer, with a little more citrus. The beer poured a clear orange though I detected a trace of a little buttery character. It was Unity simple and stripped down..

I took a night off to watch the NBA Draft (thanks for nothing Portland) and then on Friday, I headed to DTLA and Mikkeller for a Fonta Flora Brewing night. I immediately picked a sampler tray consisting of…

Beets, Rhymes and Life – beet saison – pretty pink color. Dusky, earthy. Salad like.
Southern Saison – black tea and lemon – bit of spice kick here. Pretty light underneath.
Whippoorwill Wheat – orange, coriander, earl grey tea – EG comes through. Spice again
Wolf Spit – Baltic Porter with hickory bark

I also tasted a Brut IPA from Alvarado Street Champagne Hopi that was really good, but the beet beer was my winner. Even though I detest actual beets.

Finally on Saturday, I headed to Craft Beer Cellar for a local taplist and for Dope & Dank who hosted the party with a DJ on site. I tried a new Arrow Lodge beer Arrow Sol and tasted my local Brewyard’s well-named Loch Ness Maltster.

Three Weavers meets Firestone Walker – Venice and a new rye lager collaboration named Elevator Music. It will be released on Saturday at the Propagator in Venice.

Second is…

Cloudwater Brew Co. are coming to Mikkeller – DTLA, all the way from Manchester, England. This will be a beer geek bonanza (probably some beer snobs to avoid too) because of this tap list:

NE DIPA Simcoe Citra
Pilsner Mandarina Bavaria
