Casa at the Southland

I would recommend driving out of Los Angeles to check out Casa Agria’s tap room (among many in the area) but if you wanna stay in town then Southland Beer will be pouring a mini-tap takeover of beers….

On tap:
Slammin’ at the Club – American lager
Summer in the Streets – hazy IPA
Bliss and Death – west coast IPA
Unseen Dreams – wild ale with apricots

Review – House of the Bees

News broke earlier this month that famed Koreatown beer bar and foodie spot, Beer Belly was closing as of the end of July. As one final send off, here is a review of their final One Night Stand special beer made with Cellador Ales, House of the Bees.

House of the Bees pours a super light yellow color.  Almost more off white. When cap popped off lots of bubbling sounds and a big wine barrel aroma.  Super fizzy. Very tart. Not for the sour faint of heart. Oak barrel and Melon taste collide underneath the acidity. A little ginger spice note as well.

A Friend in Koreatown

Coming up on the 16th, the Koreatown Beer Belly will be hosting Our Mutual Friend, the Denver brewery, not Janice from accounting.

For this special Thursday edition of their One Night Stand (#ONS) the following will be pouring…
1. Times Arrow (IPA)
2. Inner Light (Mosaic Pale Ale)
3. Riot of Color (Mango Lime Berliner Weiss)
4. Wicket (Belgian Wit)
5. All Colorado (IPA)
6. Weirding Way (Brett Saison) bottle pour
7. Gratitude Four (Pink Guava Saison) bottle pour

Alvarado Street and Western Avenue

One of the poppin’ popular breweries in California is Alvarado Street. You usually only see them in LA in collab form or at fancy festivals but Southland Beer will have a bevy of beers from them on tap on the 18th of the month.

Starting at 1pm you will see….
Mai Tai PA – Tropical West Coast IPA
Peninsula Pilsner
Minesweeper – West Coast IPA
38 Miles – Hazy American Pale Ale (collab with Sante Adarius)
Mangonada – Mango Kettle Sour
Spooky Juice -Hazy DIPA
Partying is Tight – Hazy DIPA (collab with Humble Sea)
Naughty By Nectar – Imperial Kettle Sour with Nectarines
Wyld Stallions – Hazy West Coast IPA (collab with Amplified Ale Works)

Four packs of cans for sale to go will also be available.

Southland Beer is about to be 1

Craft Beer Time seems to march faster and faster. It is hard to believe that Southland Beer, the corner shop on Western Avenue in Koreatown, is now a year old.

The taproom with bottle shop has pulled in some gems on tap over the past 12 months so expect an eclectic tap list on the 22nd. Also, expect to find a bottle to go too.

Another Cinco

The (now) venerable Beer Belly in Koreatown is turning 5 this year!
And they pull no punches when it comes to what is on tap. Plus they love wings. Even Volcanic ones that would make my head explode.

Do yourself a favor and head over (it is Metro adjacent) and you will find yourself trying to choose between too many great beers.
Just check out this initial list…
Beachwood BBQ & Brewing- 8 Buffalo
Lost Abbey- Red Poppy (2016)
Modern Times- Strawberry Hibiscus Fruitlands
Craftsman- Cuvee de Masumoto
Monkish/Beer Belly collab- Mind of a Peach
Eagle Rock- Yearling (CBC2016 winner)
The Bruery- Oude Tart
Bottle Logic- Leche Borracho
Smog City- Bourbon Barrel Aged O.E

Grand Opening Alert – Southland Beer

On Saturday, December 5th the currently soft-opened Southland Beer in Koreatown will throw a grand opening party to truly welcome craft beer fans south of Wilshire to their primarily tap room with some to-go sales as well.
Mark your calendar if you haven’t visited yet, it will be a great introduction to this new addition to Los Angeles.

First Look – Southland Beer

Tucked into the corner of a strip mall on Western Avenue just south of the Wiltern is the upcoming Southland Beer
They will have bottles to sell but primarily this will be a 20 tap beer bar with nibbles to tide you over….
Plus they have parking, great owners/hosts in Tim and Orchid and some really mod hop art on the walls along with a teeny-tiny sign that will tell you what they sell…
You can read more about Southland Beer in this L.A. Times article.
