Sean Suggests for October 2018

header_beer_shopping_list
I could not settle on 1 solitary theme for this month’s beer picks, so two are big and boozy and the light one is still at least a brown ale for the random hot days we encounter in SoCal October.

~LIGHT
Indie Brewing / Embers 5.50% ABV
“A sessionable brown lager that’s perfect for the fall!”

~MEDIUM
Fremont / Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dark Star 13.60% ABV
“This year’s release is a blend of 24, 18, 12, and 8-month Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dark Star in 7-12-year old Kentucky bourbon barrels. The roasted and chocolate malts complement the smooth oats to bring you a stout delight wrapped in the gentle embrace of bourbon barrel-aged warmth. A touch of sweetness dances in balance with the hops to finish with a wave, and then she’s gone.”

~BIG
Dogfish Head / Fruitfull Fort 15.00% ABV
“A twist on our beloved Fort, Fruit-Full Fort is brewed with four types of berries – Raspberry, Blackberry, Boysenberry and Elderberry! This juicy blend of dark berries creates depth and complexity reminiscent of a jammy red wine. “

All of these beers can be found at Sunset Beer Co. (unless they got bought up real quick)

Boom Goes the Anniversary

Yes, there is a “big sportsball game” this weekend. Though that seems less fun when we ponder that the New England Trumpriots will probably win and SABInBev will try to seem cool and relevant with a thirty-second commercial.

Better, perhaps to head to DTLA for the Boomtown Brewing official anniversary party on Saturday, February 3rd. Where they will be better beer talked about and everyone having fun, not just one team’s fans.

The brewery has gone from their temporary cavernous room (now event space) to one of the coolest taprooms with a great mural outside and have recently added canning as well. Most importantly to me, Mic Czech. My personal favorite.

The brewery on the northern margins of the Arts District celebrates their paper anniversary with special beer releases, guest DJ’s, food vendors, burlesque dancers after 10:30 and a raffle for prizes.

See you there!

Indie 2

Indie Brewing will be doing their 2nd Anniversary thing with TWO very special beers being tapped. The first beer is a throwback as their, Superfood Saison will return (and in cans no less.) Also their newest New England Style double IPA, Sophomoric Juice will be available on draft (growler fills available). Special pecial glassware available only in the tasting room as well as “3 food vendors, 2 bands and a DJ, and a pop up market with everything from pins to hot sauce.”

Featured Review – Taste the Rain, Bros. from Indie Brewing

Indie Brewing has another 16oz haze can. (Don’t worry, they probably have more in the pipeline, though not as colorful) I hope the Whale Bros took this as a bit of a slap. The Rain pours a hazy dark orange color. This DIPA certainly tastes double strength which, in a way, works against the haze softness texture it has going. It is more dank and piney to me. I would tag it as a hybrid that gives you flavors from both worlds.

Despite the label no skittles harmed in this beer.

Featured Review – One More NE IPA from Indie Brewing

We start the grab bag of random featured reviews with DTLA’s Indie Brewing and their 16oz can of One More NE IPA.

This NE IPA is just a bit muddy orange particulate looking. There is a green hop pellet and apricot aroma to this one. Bitter hit up front comes on strong that is somewhat lessened in strength by the cream like texture. Some floral notes underneath as well as it warms up. Between Mumford and Indie, the NE IPA is being well covered here in Los Angeles.

Anniversary Alert – Indie Brewing

Two pieces of news from Indie Brewing, the southern tip of the DTLA brewing scene.

First, they will be celebrating 1 year of business on Saturday, January 21st. There will be live music, a food truck, and most importantly for beer fans, special one off beers.

Second, their taproom will now be open for regular hours Thurs – Sunday every week. Thursday + Friday 5-10, Saturday 1-10, and Sunday 11-4. As well as a michelada brunch on Sundays.

DTLA United – The Festival

capture
If you missed the first two DTLA Beer Hop Shuttle days, well now you have the opportunity to sample beer from each and every of the 7 DTLA breweries in 1 spot. In case you need the full list: Mumford, Arts District, Iron Triangle, Boomtown, Indie, Dry River & Angel City

And it will go 100% to the Keep a Breast charity. Plus you can brag that you went to the 1st ever DTLA United Festival.

$45.oo will get you in to select from limited edition and specialty beers as well as other “local libations” such as spirits, juice and coffe plus food trucks too. Mark October 16th on your calendar.

Friday’s are Casual

I talk a fair share about beer and food pairings but beer also pairs with music, especially the orchestral stylings of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
untitled
Casual Fridays brings the beer to the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Not just any beer but beer from the Los Angeles County Brewers Guild members.

For the price of a ticket you get a concert, “usually shorter and without intermission”, Then a Question and Answer phase called TalkBack with the artists or you can head out to BP Hall with the musicians and other concertgoers to sample local craft beers …”on the house!”

The full beer season has yet to be solidified but for the October 7th concert, Indie Brewing and Strand Brewing will be featured.

Here is the set list from the music side: “This year’s series includes music by Ravel, Stravinsky, Mozart, Brahms, and Haydn. Conductors include Gustavo Dudamel, Pablo Heras-Casado and Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla. Soloists include Emanuel Ax, Stephen Kovacevich and Augustin Hadelich.”
