Featured Review – Jibe from Green Flash

Our second review stop with Green Flash is with Jibe Session IPA (the canned version).

As you can see this pours out so very clear. Tilted to yellow on the spectrum with a bit of orange peeking through. This beer starts out a bit tropical with some pineapple notes to it but then fades more into tangerine before passing the baton over to a wheat/grain taste that cohabitates with the bitter remainder of the hops.

It does taste both a little watery but also a little on the viscous side. How that is accomplished, I don’t know. The tangerine is good but I just wish it either chose more of that or more wheat notes. As it stands, it isn’t bad but I can see myself drinking it without noticing (which may be the point of Session IPA).

Featured Review – Jolly Folly from Green Flash

Yes, it is past Christmas. And yes, it is also past New Year’s but one can be jolly and be involved in a folly later in January. So let’s get to reviewing Jolly Folly IPA from Green Flash Brewing of San Diego and Virgina Beach.

This “accidental” IPA pours a clear, bright orange with a big dank aroma with an underpinning of orange peel. The bitterness really hits the palate with this one and drys out really quickly. When cold, there is more of a fruit punch taste underneath. As it warms, that fruit note fades out and you are left with an orange pekoe tea with a touch of pine to it.

Jolly Folly might just satisfy both the earthy hop lovers and the citrus hop lovers in equal measure.

Review – Green Bullet from Green Flash

Green Flash is not lying with the Triple IPA moniker.  That is a major pine scent coming off of this and it is strong.  So is the ABV.  This is a palate wrecker for sure. Lots of citrus and herbal notes.  Lots of bitterness here.  Really strong.  Did I mention that?  The New Zealand hops pop right at the beginning but the remainder of the hop assault overwhelms that delicate front note.  This is a seasonal release that will only be with us through December and I think it is definitely a colder weather IPA for sure.

Now I am reading about the starting point for one of my favorite bands from when I was younger, New Order.  It is by the band’s bassist, Peter Hook and it is his recollection of the start of Joy Division and the Manchester music scene.  Unknown Pleasures has a cool design and book jacket and has been fun to read 50 pages in.

Green Flash on the East

SO another Left Coast brewery is headed east.  Green Flash Brewing Co.  will open a new brewery in Virginia Beach.  In short time, the Silva led operation has moved to a bigger facility in San Diego and now will create a sister site in Virginia.

coming-soon

The Virginia Beach operation should be brewing in the first part of 2015 though brewery openings are usually harder to pin down

This means fresh Palate Wrecker for the East Coast and maybe a collaborative brew as well!

Beer in Miramar

In addition to finally making it to the White Labs, me and beer buddy Richard also hit three other extremely, really close breweries near the Miramar area just north of San Diego proper.

And we still didn’t visit Alesmith or Ballast Point!

First stop was Hess (or Mike Hess) Brewing…..

The Line-Up. My favorite was the Claritas Kolsch.

Next stop was Rough Draft Brewing (some of their bottles are making their way to L.A.)

The Belgian Blonde and Eraser IPA were the winners here.

Last on the itinerary was Green Flash….

This is barely a 1/4 of the size of their facility.

Green Flash is Brewing it Forward

To be blunt, I have had a few more misses than hits* from Green Flash Brewing but I do highly applaud there new charitable action like the…..

“Brewing It Forward initiative, a charitable program built to benefit grassroots humanitarian organizations. On June 26, Green Flash will hold a kick-off event for Brewing It Forward where the San Diego series beers will debut, and a portion of proceeds from sales of all three will be donated to local charities.”

You can read more HERE at the San Diego Reader.

* Linchpin White IPA with Founders was quite delicious

Highway 78

What a difference two beers make! Stone had put out some really good collaborations but after the Camino (Un)Real mash-up, I started to feel that maybe the course had been run and that it would just be shocking ingredients for awhile.

But then came Saison du Buff and the San Diego Session which were tremendous and light and dare I say session beers and not imperials or doubles.

Now the first of 2011 is coming our way and it’s back to the bold….”a big, rich, malty beer made with all English ingredients.” The beer will clock in around 8%-9%ABV and 30 IBUs and aged in Scotch barrels. The trio includes Green Flash Brewing and Pizza Port-Carlsbad.

78 refers to the highway that starts at the Pacific Ocean and is one of the most impressive beer corridors with Stone, Green Flash and Lost Abbey within miles of each other.
