Melrose Bandit

As we come out of our cocoons at our own pace, we will find some new beer places out there. Heading over to Melrose (which I have not been too in quite sone time) is the new Bandit Brews, “a taproom and restaurant serving locally sourced beer, wine and food…

Bandit Brews will have a rotating tap which currently features beers from HiDef Brewing with eight beers on tap and another eight in cans. The menu showcases a variety of locally sourced meat, fish and produce (within 200 miles), of which many items are cooked using a Santa Maria.”

We’re Pouring – Part 2

Earlier this month, I posted about We’re Pouring opening in Glendale, a nice 10 minute walk from my home base.

Weel, last week, I spoke with John Sullivan the chief pizza maker and more importantly, the chooser of beer for this Glenoaks gastropub.

That interview will come in a few days on Food GPS, in a second trip, I saw lots of great beers to choose from. They had the new Fortem from Firestone Walker that has been pretty invisible in these parts. They had Quat Hands from Cellador and many more choices on the 30 taps. And he has some great kegs in the cooler, just waiting to get on tap.

Until you make your trip to Glendale, here is the full tap list on the day that I was there….

Local Peasant

Keep the Gastropubs flowing! I heard about the Local Peasant on the KCRW show Good Food.

You can tell that a gastropub is trying by quickly scanning the draft list. Any local beers? If so, the people are clued in. It is how you propel your craft beer culture forward, faster.

I certainly will be checking out the Local Peasant (probably after LA Beer Week)

a new(er) BoHo

BoHo is one of the beer places that are integral to a craft beer eco-system. They provide a solid list of overlooked beers that go well with food (which they do well, by the way).

So when I saw what looked like a move in the works, I worried at first that they would be going away or morphing into a more mainstream establishment.

Thankfully, they have kept the decor, menu and great beer list with recent taps being Anchor Summer, Cismontane Citizen and Oskar Blues G’Knight to a new location in the Hollywood & Highland complex.

So now tourists will be able to grab an authentic American craft brew while visiting us and if you are in Los Angeles, you should give it a try. Chris Sobolewski does an excellent job with 24 taps and is growing a bottle collection that will augment the kegs nicely.

Fox and Anchor

I love one-stop shopping. When it comes to beer and travel, that means a room above where you are going to be drinking. The Fox and Anchor is part of the wave of chic gastropubs opening in the London area and England as a whole. I love historical pubs but I tend to stay longer in the places that have food options and updated decor. You can check out their drinks menu which they characterize as, “From a foaming tankard of local ale to a glistening bottle of Krug Grand Cuvée; from a sumptuous Foxy Sour to a fiery Glenmorangie; At Fox & Anchor we have everything you could ever wish for to slake your thirst in sublime surroundings.”
