The Next Movie / TV Tie-In Beer

Where is the next TV or Movie that spawns a beer series instead of just a plethora of branded cereals and logo’d t-shirts.

It seems that Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones beers are hanging on with all their might for prequels and sequels later this year and the next to juice up sales again. To be honest, I am not excited by an Iron Throne beer in 2022.

But nothing else seems to have made enough of a cultural mark to merit a NEW series of beers. The last crafty-ish tie-in that I thought looked cool was a Parks and Rec Scotch. And that is labeled Nick Offerman and not Ron Swanson.

Stranger Things has all sorts of ’80s nostalgia to mine or just use the creature names in a line of chocolate candy styled stouts. Vecna’s #001 Imperial Stout or Mind Flayer Milk Stout. But nothing. Maybe due to the main stars (under)age over the years of the show.

Maybe the new Star Trek could engage on a Brave New (brew) Worlds of beers. Red Shirt Red Ale, Captain Pike’s Old Ale. Anything to bring a bit of creativity to both entertainment and brewing.

There is no shortage of rated R shows. No shortage of shows or movies that people talk about. I don’t think streaming killed this particular golden goose.

I would like a What We Do In the Shadows beer. Anyone up for Gizmo’s Old Workd Grodziskie?

The next GoT

When Ommegang teamed with HBO and Game of Thrones for Westerosi ales, I thought of it as a cool novelty and I was excited about the first few releases and even went to a few GoT themed beer events.

But instead of one beer per TV season, the line grew and I could not really keep up and you may have noticed that I haven’t even posted about what appears to be the final beer in a fancy large format bottle.

For the Throne is a beer/wine hybrid with Champagne yeast that sounds like a fun, experimental beer. One that I will probably pick up when I binge the final six episodes later this year.

Ommegang has handled this tie-in admirably from a beer standpoint and it got me to thinking, what is the next franchise (Movie or TV) that will have such a long and fruitful relationship. Avengers as a franchise is still going but is geared more to teenage boys and comic book geeks. The Rising Skywalkers is one movie from completion with hesitant spin-offs. Hellboy might make a leap but that is even more of a niche than GoT.

It would need to be a newly established show, something with hints to wine and beer drinking but nothing firmly canon. It would need to be something R rated otherwise any drink that are product placed will be of the pandering to the teenage boy crowd and you end up with weird approximations of ButterBeer. I would take the not long leap that it would need to be something in the fantasy / SciFi realm as well to allow for creativity, though a long shot might be a comedy where the main characters have a favorite beer.

I do think that we will not see the like of the Ommegang Throne beers anytime soon though.

For Mom (of the Dragons)

Seems like Ommegang is more prolific than George R.R.R.R.R Martin as well as yet another beer is on the way for the Mother of Dragons….

This blend actually is the most interesting choice (though somewhat obvious) of the recent releases.

A Hint to the Ending?

When Game of Thrones isn’t on, I tend to pass on the related beers from Ommegang. I am certainly not going to drink them while watching Westworld.

But the beer name might suggest to those looking for any clues that a woman would ascend the Iron Throne.

Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, “the second of four special beers in this year’s Game of Thrones-inspired Royal Reserve Collection. Inspired by Cersei Lannister, this exceptional blend of Belgian sour ale and Belgian-style blonde ale.”

Now I need to get bottle 1 and 2 and cellar them until the show returns.

The Hand

As we close in on the close of the series for Game of Thrones has Ommegang tipped their hand a bit? (sorry, horrible word choice). Will a Queen rule the Seven Kingdoms? Either way, I am glad to see a barleywine for the next GoT beer. It makes a nice change of pace from previous entrants.

The Next GOT book is Not Here but ….

…the next Game of Thrones TV tie-in beer from Ommegang is

Winter is Here, an imperial white ale bearing the sullen visage of the White Walker leader and his snazzy hair style.

I admit that I missed the last release. None of the beers have been super-duper to me, though to be fair, would probably go over well in Westeros.

Bend the Knee

Is this the second golden ale from the Ommegang – Game of Thrones series of beers? OK, the first beer was a Blonde ale but it would have been fun to see a new beer style like an altbier or kellerbier instead of the golden ale of Bend the Knee (like the name)….

I think I missed the last beer in the series so I have some catching up to do, much like Martin has with writing.

Die or Serve

750 MLSeven Kingdoms labels Jan 13 2016
The latest Brewery Ommegang Game of Thrones release is now slated for October (probably to coincide with the DVD release). Valar Dohaeris is a companion to the previously released Valar Morghulis. So you have All Men Must Serve to go along with the ominous, All Men Must Die.

Here are the new beers stats:
“Valar Dohaeris is 9% ABV, brewed with pils, wheat and oats, flaked barley, and hopped with noble hops. It pours a beautiful copper-tinted hue with a full, fluffy white head. Sweet grain and honey are prevalent in the aroma. The flavor opens with a bright sweetness thanks to the Belgian candi sugar used in brewing. The finish is moderately dry and effervescent with just a hint of Belgian yeast character.”

The last two beers in this series (which is more prolific than R.R.) have only been so-so to me, so I am hoping the new one will be a return to form.

You can buy the duo of Valar’s in a collectible gift pack which also includes a commemorative glass as well. Suggested retail price is $9.99 for the individual bottles and $22.99 for the gift pack.
No spoilers, since I have not binge watched the latest GoT series.

The Firkin for April 2016

header_firkin
I entitled a pair of posts this months, “Just Stop”. That continues here with other miscellaneous bothersome beer things that can I am so done with, as of yesterday.

Beer bets between cities in major sports – Whatever the local delicacy, it seems Mayors love to make bets and put out a press release about it. Maybe as a dodge or deflection from real political isues? I don’t know but somehow beer got roped in and seems a big part of the bets nowadays. I am all for themed sports beers, especially when it comes to Portland’s Trailblazers or Timbers but these bets don’t add much to craft beer.

Game of Thrones – I am sure to be in the minority here but I have grown weary of the annual themed beer from Ommegang and the inevitable variety pack that will soon follow. Last season’s beers are still a’molding on the shelf in a couple stores and Seven Kingdoms did nothing for me. Now I don’t hate them as much as Ian McShane hates the show but I have grown weary of the branding being cooler than the beer.

Not time stamping your bottles/cans – I know that I can’t trust BevMo or CostPlus to rotate out the old let alone a corner store and I would rather not have to be wary upon entering a beer shoppe so do us a favor and time stamp the shit out of any beer that even remotely would be better fresh. It is the easy way to protect your reputation and help out the consumer.

Hating a Hater – I still don’t understand why some people out in the beer interweb world get wound up when someone says they don’t like a beer or a brewery. I say, Great! More beer for me at the end of the day if it is a brewery that I like. I guess some people prefer typing out swear words instead of having a beer. Not to mention that the chance that the person is trolling the fans is probably close to 90% means that you are basically wasting your time.

Rebranding – Full Sail, Fort Collins, AleSmith, Bell’s and a bevy of others have been re-branding lately. Was there a memo telling everybody to hit the refresh button. I long for a re-brand like Stone where the recipe was freshened up as well.

It feels good to get that off of my chest.

Every Last Kingdom

untitled
A bit confusing, but for Season 6 of the HBO series Game of Thrones, Brewery Ommegang is releasing Seven Kingdoms, a hoppy wheat beer.

Described thusly, “Seven Kingdoms is a marriage of a traditional Belgian-style wheat and a hop-forward American ale – but unlike so many of the marriages on the show, the resulting hoppy wheat is pleasant, playful and inspired. Seven Kingdoms harmoniously weds citrusy and herbal American hops, with wheaty maltiness and moderate bitterness.”

I still would like to see an altbier or Gratzer style done. Maybe that will come later.
