Fresh Hop Ale time

The first couple of weeks in September are a magical time for hopheads and lovers of the bitter beers.

It is when the fresh (wet) hop ales start flowing. Usually because they are marketed as such, they end up mostly in kegs and mostly local. There are some bottled versions (Full Sail and Bridgeport in Portland) and even canned versions (the new Surly Wet) but the best bet is to check your local brewery or craft beer bar for what’s coming in the next couple weeks.

You can call or quiz your barkeep. But what I found to work is to friend them on Facebook or if you do the tweet thing, follow them there. If you are in Los Angeles, head to Ladyface Ales in Agoura Hills. They have a fresh hop XPA, Palo Comado that is delicious.

These are great beers with a real kick and sparkle to them.

TSA approved beer!

Twice now I have ferried beer via airline from Portland to Los Angeles. This is the second part. A new red ale from the organic folks at Hopworks, a special release from Redhook and a Full Sail specialty Belgian with the awesome name of Sanctuary.

Can’t wait to try these goodies.

Oh and here is my official grainy video of the opening of OBF 2010. The Year of the Superbrewer!

Fresh Hop article

It has been posted already but I wanted to make sure this nice little article got some more air time because it is a great example of how craft beer is much more in touch with its ingredients and suppliers.

Session Black

Those cute, little, stubby red-labeled bottles from Full Sail are such a hit that brand extension was inevitable. What we get is a dark lager at 5.4 abv.

They will come in the same cases as the regular but with slate grey coloring and a more malty taste. I will be harassing my local Whole Foods to start stocking it soon.

4th of July Beers

It is our patriotic duty to get our economy humming again by celebrating the diversity of American beer. A declaration of beer independence so to speak. Here are some choices that will go great on a hot 4th of July afternoon…..

Full Sail Session Lager (or Session Black) – great beer that you can have more than one of as the sun beats down.

Pikeland Pils – celebrate the true American pils not the watered down rice/corn stuff.

Mama’s Little Yella Pils – another great canned pils.

Haymaker Extra Pale – light, refreshing with a spicy, citrusy finish.

Liberty Ale – a beer from the dawn of the craft brewing age.

Best beer for a Super Bowl

Full Sail’s Session. Comes in a case of 12 stubby bottles. Light and refreshing. An excellent choice for a large group of people. Low alcohol without sacrificing taste. And look at the bottom of the cap! Rock – Paper – Scissors!!!
