the colLAboration continues…

…and here is the latest update, “colLAboration – the mobile craft beer garden from the brains behind Tony’s Darts Away, Verdugo Bar/Surly Goat, Blue Palms and 38 Degrees – is popping-up a second time in Hollywood on Saturday, June 4th at the corner of Gower and Hollywood, from noon til 7 p.m.

The garden will feature dozens of the best in California beers including:
Firestone Walker, Sierra Nevada, Russian River, Beer Valley, Craftsman, Green Flash, Moylan’s, Avery, Alesmith, New Belgium, Dogfish Head, Port/Los Abbey, Eagle Rock, Hangar 24, Oskar Blues, Grand Teton, Uinta and many more.

Also, for the entire month of July, COLLAB will be held every Friday (4 p.m. to 9 p.m) and Saturday (noon to 9 p.m.) on the Sunset Strip right across from the world-famous Roxy Theater, featuring craft beer from California and beyond.

When: Saturday, June 4th 12 noon to 7pm.

Where:6124 Hollywood Blvd. at the corner of Gower and Hollywood

Cost:Those who purchased the $10 glass from the first event can use that as their admission; most beers will be $5 to $6. Glasses will also soon be available for purchase online at http://www.collaboration.la/

Jolly Stone O

It seemed like the collaborative brewing trend has lost some of the steam and “cool” factor lately.  Thankfully this special brew is here to disprove that….

This version was brewed at Jolly Pumpkin so expect some sour or tart to it to accompany the juniper, chestnuts, sage and caraway. Sounds simialar to the Saison du Buff with the herbs.

the Stone collaborations keep coming

San Diego County Session Ale is the latest in the lovely etched collaboration bottles to soon grace our ‘fridges. It was brewed over the course of the summer by Colby Chandler from Ballast Point, Mitch Steele from Stone and Kelsey McNair from a brewery I have yet to taste from called North Park Beer Co..

I am glad the session is taking over!

Mikkeller + 3 Floyds x 3 =

While Mikkeller the nomad brewer was in Chicago for the Craft Brewers Conference, he apparently made another side trip to Munster, Indiana to make another collaboration brew with Three Floyds. The unpronounceable Ruggoop is a 10% ABV “Rye Wine.”

These two eccentric and much loved and followed breweries have been down this road before. Weird names, weirder labels and even weirder styles. Hvedegoop – a hoppy wheatwine was the first collaboration. Second came Oatgoop. That beer was a wheatwine brewed with oats.

Maybe next up will be a brett wine.

Deschutes + Hair of the Dog =

I don’t normally do the cut and paste for an entire press release but this is momentous for beer geeks everywhere…

Bend, Oregon (April 2010) – Deschutes Brewery and Hair of the Dog Brewing Company today announced that they are working together on an exciting new beer. These two Oregon companies have taken a completely different approach to developing their companies since their founding, and are looking forward to blending their two styles together for a new beer to be released in 2011.

“When we started talking about collaborating on a project, Alan Sprints at Hair of the Dog was the first person I thought of working with,” said Gary Fish, president of Deschutes Brewery. “We’ve known each other for a long time and partnering on a project like this was the perfect way to be able to do something original and unique together. When you have two creative companies embarking on a creative project together, something fun is bound to result.”

Sprints came over to Bend in early March to brew two of his beers at the Deschutes Brewery brewhouse. Then it was Deschutes Brewery brewmaster Larry Sidor’s turn to brew two of his own beers. These four beers (which will remain unnamed as yet) will be aged in various wood barrels and then blended together sometime in early 2011 in a ratio yet to be determined as part of the creative process. Over the next several months, Hair of the Dog and Deschutes Brewery will be meeting to sample the aging beer and contemplate the blending process.

Sprints said, “This partnership was born in an effort to express the vitality of today’s American brewing community and push the boundaries of what is commonly known as beer. Both of our companies share a pride in Oregon products and I have long admired the level of professionalism that Gary brings to the brewing industry. My idea was to do a blend of beers that we already produced, merging our products and passion for beer, hoping to create a beverage that will be deep, complex, earthy and beguiling.”

This is the first collaborative beer for each of the companies, and everyone is excited to see how the new beer will develop. Fish continued, “We have no idea how these four beers will taste blended together, but we do know that the total will be greater than the sum of its parts.”

Here is the May 2010 topic:
“Who’s brewed some of your favorite collaborations?
Who have been some of your favorite collaborators?
Who would you like to see in a future collaboration?”

For me, the first two are easy so let’s dispense with those right away.

Favorite collaboration is the John-John series. I know technically that both John’s work under the Rogue umbrella. But the brewer meets distiller meets the criteria for me. And the Rogue Hazelnut mixed with rum barrels is one of my favorite beers. I can’t wait to grab a bottle of the Juniper aged in gin barrels.

Favorite collaborators are the geniuses from Stone Brewing. I’m sure I will be joined by many others in voting for them just based on the Maui / Ken Schmidt porter collaboration but working with an all-star dream team of BrewDog, 21st Amendment, Firestone-Walker and Jolly Pumpkin is amazing.

Future collaborations is such a tough one. There are just so many choices. So I had to set some rules.
1. Breweries with different styles but not philosophies.
2. Breweries that haven’t collaborated with each other before.
3. Only three breweries and what beer style I would like to see.
With that groundwork in place, here are the three breweries and why I selected them + what beer should be made….drumroll please…..

Black Star Co-Op

First reason why – All relatively new. No preconceptions of what to do or how to do it.
Second Reason why – The first two are from my hometown (Portland) and adopted hometown (Los Angeles). And Black Star is just cool for doing this Co-Op style.

I would love to see them make a simple style with a twist. Perhaps a rye pale ale or a multi-grain porter.
