Review – BFD from Sierra Nevada

There are more of the “stovepipe” cans out on shelves and one that I have recently tasted is from the venerable Sierra Nevada, BFD. Is it a big deal?

Pours a light yellow and oh so clear. Straightforward and simple. Lightly dusted with bitterness. Aroma is very muted. I am reaching when I say a sweet bready note. Very lip smacking. Light pineapple note to it. Kings Hawaiian roll? If you are watching an NFL Draft or the Freakin’ Pelicans, this is a beer you can enjoy without worry about having had too many.

A Hint to the Ending?

When Game of Thrones isn’t on, I tend to pass on the related beers from Ommegang. I am certainly not going to drink them while watching Westworld.

But the beer name might suggest to those looking for any clues that a woman would ascend the Iron Throne.

Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, “the second of four special beers in this year’s Game of Thrones-inspired Royal Reserve Collection. Inspired by Cersei Lannister, this exceptional blend of Belgian sour ale and Belgian-style blonde ale.”

Now I need to get bottle 1 and 2 and cellar them until the show returns.

Review – Cabotella from Baja Brewing

I didn’t quite know what to expect from this beer. Cabotella is the flagship of Baja Brewing of which I knew little about until the beer arrived at my doorstep.

I was expecting light to watery. Hoping for more, secretly. And what I tasted was quite strange. But not in a bad way at all. It was very grainy yet had notes that reminded me of Naughty Sauce from Noble. It was no blonde for sure and I wouldn’t consider it a thirst-quencher in the model of a kolsch or crisp pilsner. It is also a bit too much for food in my opinion because of the malt heaviness and sweetness. Though it would be interesting to taste it on nitro to see if that amps it up.

Review – Firestone 805 Blonde Ale

photo 1

Thanks to the folks up in Paso Robles at Firestone Walker, I got not only a stylin’ hat but the new(ish) to L.A. 805 Blonde ale to review.

Pours a medium yellow with lots of bubbles. Waves of grain taste with this one. From wheat to toast. On top of that sits a honey sweetness. A bit dry at the end to me. For a light beer it has many layers to it. And it has just enough scrubbing bubbles to clean up in the end. This could easily be a great March Madness beer.
