Sunbather 3

Mosaic will be out in the sun as Angel City Brewery releases their third in the Sunbather sour/single-hop series. June 1st the 16oz, grapefruit colored cans of kettle-soured pale ale will be available.

Both of the previous sours have been quite good, so I recommend trying a 4-pack.

Your Heritage

May 20th marks the return of the Angel City Heritage Festival for the 6th year. They have lots of food, music and cultural performances but let’s focus on the beer aspect, of which two things leap out from the press release:
1. A community coloring art mural featuring hop leaves our favorite plant, the hop!
2. Speciality beers available throughout the day, including special casks of Angel City IPA and our new releases Strawberry Gose and Srirachelada (which will debut in cans this year)

Featured Review – Public House Saison from Angel City

The final Angel City review strays from wax to 16oz cans with their new-ish Public House Saison…

Public House is not hazy but not clear either. More opaque. Really nice multi-faceted beer. Starts with a big Belgian (hefe?) aroma then slides into a hopped Pilsner stage before returning to a Saison with a bite of lemon verbena notes and a touch of bubblegum. The hop hit is there and then cedes the stage. Well done.

Featured Review – Mattole River Tripel from Angel City Brewery

I had a harder time getting through the wax on this cap of Mattole River Tripel from Angel City but once I opened up the bottle there were some really big grape wine/grape tannin notes bursting through. That was followed by lots of oaky wood in this prettily orange colored tripel. The Belgian notes are a bit buried here and it is hot on the roof of the mouth. Leaving me to think that this beer might be even better if let to sit a bit.

Featured Review – Funky Wit from Angel City

This is the 4th vintage of the Funky Wit from Angel City. I also received the Mattole River Tripel around the same time so, which will be my favorite?

Let’s dive in….
I got through the purple wax without too much trouble and was greeted by what I would quantify as medium funk in the aroma. The taste starts out with a little zip of sour before a mixture of wood and toast notes take over for a duet. Not much of a head and I am not getting much coriander and the orange peel is pretty darn minimal too. Both would have added layers if amplified a bit. A bit of a white wine taste does sneak in as well.

Seafood and Beer

There are some good beer dinners out there but Angel City has teamed with Chef Jonathan Pimental for a 5-Course Beer Dinner that focuses on the sea.

On Wednesday, November 29th at 7:00pm, Pimental (formerly of Spago and Patina) will take guests “Down the Cape” with a “Boston inspired menu with Latin twist.”

Be prepared for the following menu:
“Ahi Tuna Stack on a crispy Potato Sope with Lima Bean Puree and finished with a fresh Mango Serrano Salsa. Other courses will showcase fresh Prawns and Maine Lobster flown in from the East Coast, each thoughtfully paired with an Angel City brew. Round-off the evening with Churro-Inspired Funnel Cakes topped with caramel shards.

Less than Zero

One of my favorite beer names of the year comes from Angel City, Zero Flocs Given. Both timely and profane.

This LA via NE IPA is the latest can release from the DTLA brewery. ZFG will arrive on Friday, October 20th, available exclusively at the Brewery. The beer will also be on draft at the Brewery’s Public House while supplies last.

Here is the brewery description, “A New-England Style IPA with 7.3% ABV and 50 IBU, Zero Flocs Given catches the eye with a cloudy golden orange appearance and awakens the senses with aromas of ripe tropical fruit, citrus, pine and resin. A slightly stinging bitterness balanced by juicy malt sweetness…”

There will be a Can Release party ,starting at 4pm, where the first 50 in line will receive a free Zero Flocs limited edition art poster and sticker.

Los Angeles is entering the last two months of summer. This is the time for that last hurrah of kolsch, helles and the lighter side of the beer world before heading into our version of Autumn. This month I have “planned” the following….

~ e-visits to three breweries from Houston, Texas. Doubtful any of them will have beers named Harvey anytime soon.
~ special featured reviews of Cloudwater Brew Co.
~ Heads-Up on Los Angeles Beer Events
~ Three suggested beers to buy this month. One light, one medium and one dark
~ A Book & A Beer reads IT from Stephen King
~ I will tap the Firkin and give my no holds barred opinion on the craft beer world.

Here are two events to get your August started in the Los Angeles craft beer world:
1) September 9th – Buy a Dog a Beer Festival at Wolf Creek Brewing
2) September 16th-17th – Saaztoberfest Weekend at Angel City.
