Avocado18

For you fans of the guac, it is that time of year down at Angel City. The 2018 Avocado Fest is on the way. Even I enjoy the beer and I find actual avocados a wee bit gross.

The “Kölsch-style ale will be available exclusively at the Angel City Public House and will be released in 4-packs of 16 oz. on Friday, August 10th, starting at 12pm.”

The 6th edition of the fest starts Saturday, August 11th at appropriately, 11am and will run through Sunday, August 12th until 8pm. There will be food, a DJ and plenty of beer.

Mixed Culture and Pils

One of the side benefits of Firestone Walker bringing brewers to Los Angeles for their Pils & Love Fest is that those same brewers are in town and bring more beer with them.

Case in point: Highland Park – Chinatown will have two special events that might have you riding the Gold Line two evenings in a row….

Thursday July 26th is a Mixed Culture tap takeover with our friends visiting from out of state as well as some California locals.

Friday July 27th
is our Lager tap takeover with Burial Beer featuring the same group of rad breweries from the night before.

Paired LA – Get your Tickets!

I have already posted about the PAIRED® event that is coming to Downtown LA this October but the ticket pre-sale has just begun and I do not want you to miss out on this major “collaboration between award-winning chefs and small and independent craft brewers from around the country.”

Brewers Association executive chef Adam Dulye will be there, which is an educational treat in itself but you will get to meet the brewers and chefs from all over too. How about the 2018 James Beard Award winner Alex Seidel from Mercantile Dining and Provision in Denver. Let’s double that with the 2017 James Beard Award winner Kevin Nashan from Sidney Street Café in St. Louis. Chefs from Texas, Virginia, DC, Colorado, Tennessee, Wyoming and more will be bringing their regions cuisine to us.

Ranger the Bear Approved

It is hard to believe that the Brew at the L.A. Zoo will be turning 8 this year but that is indeed what will happen on Friday, August 3rd from 7pm to 11pm. Or you can VIP it and start at 6pm.

The Brewery at Simzy’s Burbank has stepped up again and has brewed up a Zoo beer with ingredients chosen by the L.A. Zoo’s American black bear, Ranger (excellent name for a bear, by the way). “Specially crafted for Brew at the L.A. Zoo, the pale ale has notes of hibiscus flowers and honey, ingredients picked by Ranger himself.”

Here are the participating breweries that I think you should taste from (others are either part of SABInBev or trendy spiked drinks)
101 Cider House, Alosta Brewing Co., Angel City Brewery, Baja Brewing Company, Ballast Point Brewing Company, Brewyard Beer Company,Firestone Walker Brewing Co., Five Threads Brewing, Four Sons Brewing, Innovation Brew Works, KeVita, King Harbor Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Co., Latitude 33 Brewing, MacLeod Ale Brewing Co., Pizza Port Brewing Company, San Fernando Brewing Co.,Stone Brewing, The Bruery, Three Weavers Brewing Co., Transplants Brewing Company, Verdugo West Brewing Company, Yorkshire Square Brewery, and more…

Plan It

If you hadn’t noticed, this blog is not a fan of the intolerant, racist, sexist Ooompa Loompa in office (no offense to the good Oompa’s out there), which means that this August 4th event from Transplant’s Brewing is quite important. Especially with the radical right turn the Supreme Court will most likely soon take.

“We are proud to announce our second annual Planned Parenthood Rocks fundraiser! We plan to make this year’s event even better than ever! This year our local Planned Parenthood Action League is joining forces with Transplants Brewing Company to raise funds for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles! A portion of the alcohol sales will go to Planned Parenthood and there will be an amazing line-up of speakers, delicious catered food, vendors, raffle prizes, games, crafts, a drag show and all kinds of other entertainment!”

South of the DTLA Border

If the World Cup has you rooting for El Tri, you can take it a step further and El Try some fine Mexican beers on tap at Mikkeller downtown. The prices are a bit on the high side but considering the quality and rare beers that will surely be on tap, it will be worth it.

FWIBF18 – Day 1

It is that time of the year. A beer fans Christmas. The Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Festival.

Here is what happened in the drive up to Paso Robles (nothing, except that the 46 has been paved more) and what was drunk once I got there…

First stop after checking in was Silva Brewing. They had a beer and chocolate pairing in progress as well as new beers in fancy bottle packaging.

I tasted the Chuck-Amok with Chuck Silva himself nearby. Then I had the draft version of his Rose beer which really tasted great with some serious Chardonnay notes.

From there it was on to Firestone Walker for the annual tour to show off the new buildings and re-jiggering that has taken place. The campus is now around 18 acres and this coming next is a solar array to provide power for all of the buildings. The newest coming online is a massive cold building. It is too big to call just a box.

The end of the tour brought a tasting of the Anniversary beer amongst barrels from the “cocktail” series. Dark and Stormy, which I tasted back in March is part of that.

Then a brief respite before heading back for BBQ and music. I tried the latest Luponic Distortion and a Propagator beer, Patrick Hayes v2. I also filled my cup with OMG Hazy IPA from Garage Project.

I called it a day soon after.
