How Heavy?

What makes a Friday better? A new beer bottle release and pizza. On September 28th, Yorkshire Square in Torrance will release How Heavy This Mash, English Barleywine. And invite Enduro Pizza over too.

And there will be a special oaked version of the beer on cask that night as well.

Hunt for It

Boomtown Brewery is taking advantage of being Arts District adjacent to adorn their latest DIPA release The Hunted with cool imagery. This time the artist is J. Collins and the beer is a hazy Double IPA. If you are a fan of Galaxy and Mosaic hops, then be ready on Saturday, September 22nd at 12:00PM for the sale. Four-packs are $18 and there will be food trucks, Hunted merch and music.

Use Your Outdoor Stein

Two special beers will be released at Glendale’s Brewyard for their Outdoor Oktoberfest Celebration. First is the Bourbon Barrel-Aged Black Common in bottle release form and second is their special Pumpkin Spice Rye Lager on tap.

After a recent visit, I noticed a definite uptick in the beers. I was fond of them already but a Stein Member cryo-hopped beer was amazing in aroma in taste, more so than a lot of IPA’s, and their Cali-Pino with calamansi fruit was excellent. A perfect summer quencher. So expect some great beers and pretzels too.

Cellador at Two

Mark Saturday, October 6th on your calendar as the sour and wild Cellador Ales celebrates their second birthday with not just one but possibly two anniversary beers.

The tasting room & outside patio will be open withe multiple pouring stations. Expect some fun and weird beers on tap and from their distinctively labeled bottles. Kogi BBQ will be there in the afternoon and Pacific Pizza Co. at night

It will be a cash only event and your first pour will include glassware (at additional cost). The first 250 people will receive an exclusive Anniversary glass.

CCBA in the LBC

Looks like a flight to the state capital will NOT be needed next year. Why? The annual California Craft Brewers blow-out will be held in Long Beach in 2019!

I went to the 1st ever Summit and it was great. Sacramento has a terrific beer scene. One that I will visit again. But flying and hotel’ing is not as easy as say, riding the Blue Line to Long Beach.

Even if I don’t get a media pass, I will be there. The discussion and brewing topics are great. The convention floor is filled with a tremendous amount of beer from across the state and the food and beer pairing is always strong. And a shout out to Bart Watson, he is always great with his presentations. If he is there, you should be too.

Randall Hand

Hand Brewed Beer finally got their taproom through the paperwork hurdles and are now open. And if you are looking for when to visit, how about Wednesday?

Why? Every Wednesday their head brewer, Damien breaks out the beer randall and runs a different beer through it.

A quick randall re-cap, the device infuses fresh fruit or other foods into beer as it passes from the keg to the tap. One Hand Brewed example was their Bridge to Nowhere IPA infused with jalepeno and grapefruit.

So pick a Wednesday and head to Chatsworth for a unique beer experience.

Terroir Firestone

Seems like Firestone Walker is cornering the high-end festival market. From the Barrel, Pils & Love and of course the super popular (rightly so) Invitational to the new Terroir.

There are rules to this earth driven event though. Each of the breweries making their way to the vineyard-y area of Los Olivos would be making their own beer but:

1. same grain bill
2. same maturation period in barrels
3. same co-fermented percentage of wort & wine grapes
AND “all grapes had to be grown within 100 miles of each brewery”

Beavertown – London, England
Garage Project – Wellington, New Zealand
Jester King – Austin, TX
Side Project – St. Louis, MO
Sierra Nevada – Chico, CA
Trillium – Boston, MA
+ BarrelWorks – Firestone Walker too.

Oh and there will be more beer (and wine). With Firestone Walker, there always is:
“This event will also feature five guest breweries who are not part of the 2018 Terroir Project but who are pushing boundaries & exploring new realms of wild ales. Also in attendance are four wineries whose grapes have been used in beers before.”

All for just $65 plus you will be far away from the madding LA crowd and amidst agriculture.

A Friend in Koreatown

Coming up on the 16th, the Koreatown Beer Belly will be hosting Our Mutual Friend, the Denver brewery, not Janice from accounting.

For this special Thursday edition of their One Night Stand (#ONS) the following will be pouring…
1. Times Arrow (IPA)
2. Inner Light (Mosaic Pale Ale)
3. Riot of Color (Mango Lime Berliner Weiss)
4. Wicket (Belgian Wit)
5. All Colorado (IPA)
6. Weirding Way (Brett Saison) bottle pour
7. Gratitude Four (Pink Guava Saison) bottle pour
